Automating Windows Update

Manually Updating Windows

Note: For employees on the campus-wide system, these options are unavailable - the computer automatically is updated.

First, go online and click on the 'Start' button. Then, depending on which version of Windows you have, the shortcut to Windows Update will either be near the top of that menu, or you will have to click on 'Programs,' in which the link to update Windows will be near the top of that menu. If for some reason there is no shortcut to click on, another way to get there is to open a web browser and in the address bar go to, 'windowsupdate.microsoft.com.'

Click 'Scan for Updates' as seen in 1.
Click 'Review and install Updates*' updates as seen in 2.

Click on the grey Install Button

*Note: There are both 'Critical Updates and Service Packs' as well as non-critical updates. We reccomend getting all the critical updates which are automatically selected for you. The non-critical updates are optional and for the most situations, do not need to be installed.
