Borrowing and returning materials
 
Borrowing: To check out materials, you must present your current ID card at the Circulation Desk.  Library staff checks out books to you by scanning the barcode on your library card and the barcode on the material you are borrowing.

Returns: You may return materials owned by the Portland Center Library to either the Newberg or Portland location.  Likewise you may return material owned by the Murdock Learning Resource Center to the Portland or Newberg location.  Please return reserve and interlibrary loan materials to the locations from which you borrowed them. Summit items may be returned to the library from which they were borrowed, or to any other Summit library.

Requesting books
 
GFU Books currently checked out may be requested by another patron.  From FOXTRAX, the library catalog, click on the request button and enter the appropriate information.

Summit books are requested through the Summit catalog. After a Summit request is made, the system will send you an email when a request has been placed successfully. If no request is possible, you will be re-directed to an interlibrary loan form.  You can keep track of your Summit request in “My Summit account”.

Renewing books
 
You can renew GFU books online, by using the "My Account" tab. You will need your barcode from the bottom of your George Fox University ID card. 
You must renew your items before they are due.
  • Click on "My Account" tab; enter your last name and 14 digit barcode, click the button marked "items currently checked out."

Currently Summit materials are not renewable.  Books are considered long term loans and check out for 6 weeks.  DVD's and videos are usually considered short term loans and check out for 6 days.

 
Interlibrary loan items may be renewed by requesting a renewal in your interlibrary loan account.  Please make sure you request a renewal before the due date as renewals are granted by the lending institution. Access your account from the library homepage http://www.georgefox.edu/offices/murdock/ill.html  If you need to request a renewal after the due date, please contact the interlibrary loan supervisor.

Fees and fines
 
Fines are charged for overdue items.  Borrowers are expected to be responsible for what they borrow. 
 
 Non-reserve item 25 cents per day 
 Video \ DVD $1 per day 
 Summit item

50 cents per day, first 10 days,

 $1 per day, next 15 days

 2, 4, or 24 hour reserve item 25 cents per hour 
 3 or 7 day reserve item
 $1 per day
 
It is important to know that:
  • Library materials owned by George Fox have a maximum late fee of $10 per item. When the maximum is reached, the book is assumed lost and you will be billed for a lost book, which includes the late fee, processing fee, and cost of the book.

  • Summit items have a maximum late fee of $20, plus a processing fee and the replacement cost of the book if lost.

  • View your patron account to see fees that are owed. Fines and fees can be paid at the Circulation desk.

 
Library notification

All students in the University receive their Library notices electronically. Notices are initiated a few days before books are due, when books are overdue, and when books have arrived for you to pick up.

Reserve materials

Materials placed on reserve by professors for student check out can be located by accessing the Course Reserves Tab on the library homepage and proceeding to search by course or professor name. Electronic reserves can be accessed and downloaded for personal use by the student. Other materials on reserve will be housed behind the Circulation desk. Please bring the title of the material, professor’s name, and the call number when you come to the circulation desk.

Technical help desk

The IT help desk is located in the Newberg library Monday – Thursday evenings from 6 p.m. - 11 p.m., on Saturday from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. and Sunday from 2 p.m. - 10 p.m.  If you have an IT related question, you can reach appropriate staff during those hours in the library, or by calling 503-554-2569, or by email servicedesk@georgefox.edu.

Print and copy cards

To print from a computer in the Information Commons, you must have money on your George Fox Print account. Printing is $.10 a page on both the Newberg and Portland campuses. Print cards can be purchased in increments of $1.00 and $5.00 amounts. The Newberg campus's color printer is $.20 a page.

To copy material in the Information Commons, you must have money on your George Fox Print account and use your GFU ID card to operate the machines. The Portland Center Library has copy card operated machines and sells cards in denominations of $1.00, $5.00, $10.00, and $20.00.

 Reserving study space at the Murdock Learning Resource Center

  • Rooms 101, 102, and 103 are located on the main floor of the MLRC.
  • The Upstairs Study Room is located on the 2nd Floor next to the Special Collections Room, which currently houses the Academic Resource Center.
  • The primary purpose of these rooms is for group study. All study rooms may be reserved by students, faculty, and staff. George Fox University students, faculty and employees are given first preference.
    On occasion, reservations will be accepted for activities related to the George Fox Community.
  • Fill out the online form. The circulation supervisor will check the room availability and confirm your reservation by email.
    If the room has already been reserved, you will be notified of that as well.
  • Reservations are usually made for no more than 4 hours or for more than one occurrence.
    Faculty may contact the Circulation Supervisor for exceptions.

Reserving study space at the Portland Center Library

There are four multi-purpose rooms in the Portland Center Library that can be reserved by students, faculty, staff and others.  George Fox University students, faculty, and employees are given preference.  The primary purpose of these rooms is for group study.  All rooms include a video set-up. 

To reserve a room at the Portland Center Library, you may:

  • Call the circulation desk, 503-554-6130
  • Use the sign-up book at the check-out counter
  • Email Mikell Benham, Circulation Coordinator (available Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.)
