Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is my schedule of classes (students in a major)?
A. Your cohort calendar is here. Note: Currently we register you for all classes.
And: A list of all classes you are registered for is available in BruinData.
Q. Where can I take general education or elective courses?
A. Enroll in classes at our centers in Oregon, or Boise.
Q. What if it doesn't work for me to take general education classes at George Fox?
A. Check one of these options:
Chemeketa
Clackamas

PCC
Umpqua (under revision--see your advisor)
Q. Why aren't my transfer credits showing up properly on my GFU record?
A. Possible reasons:
  • Community colleges and state universities in Oregon operate on the quarter system. Consequently one quarter credit transfers to GFU as 0.667 semester credit. This means (for example) that a 3 quarter credit class from PCC will appear on your George Fox record as 2.001 semester credits.
  • You must request an official transcript from your previous/other institution. If you have taken additional courses you will need to order another copy; we recommend you do this each term you take more classes.
  • It takes a few days to a week or more to record credit once it is received. In addition, transfer credit appears first on BruinData, in your online Transfer credit display. The Degree Works Audit usually lags behind by about four days. By the way, when we evaluate your transfer classes, we will attach a George Fox course number to your transfer title.
  • It's just possible we missed something. Please allow a couple of weeks for your sending institution to get the transcript to us, and for us to evaluate it and post the credits. Then feel free to contact us and inquire.
Q. How do I achieve credit for Prior Learning Experiences (i.e., professional or community training)?
A. Brief instructions and the required cover forms are available on the "Prior Learning" section of the Resources page. In addition, we regularly offer evening workshops explaining how to submit your non-college learning for credit. Watch for emailed announcements.
Q. What about life experience?
A. George Fox, like most colleges, does not grant credit for experience. We do however often grant credit for learning garnered from experience. To demonstrate this learning, students write structured essays following the Kolb model. The essays are reviewed by GFU faculty for possible credit. To pursue this process students enroll in MGOL 285 Personal and Professional Assessment, offered each semester. Completing this course may enable students to earn as much as 30 credits toward their degree at NO additional financial charge. (Course offerings in Oregon and Idaho are available on the Resources page.)
Q. How much does Prior Learning credit cost? How many credits can I earn?
A. Currently PLA credit is charged at $50 per semester credit. However, students passing MGOL 285 Personal and Professional Assessment may earn up to the limit of 30 semester credits at NO additional cost beyond tuition for the course. Including credits earned by the course itself, it is possible for some students to earn up to 33 credits paying only the tuition for three semester credits.
Q. What about credit by Exam?
A. GFU accepts many of the College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) exams. For more detail on the tests we accept and the subjects covered by them, look here.

The form for release of Student Financial Services information is available here.
