Advising Philosophy

At George Fox, advising is a critical component to your success as a student. As such, it is essential that you understand why advising exists at George Fox and our philosophy and goals that we have for the advising process.

Advising Philosophy at George Fox
  1. This is Your Education-, you have come to George Fox to receive a quality college education. However, what you may not realize is that you are as much an active participant in the educational process as you are a recipient of high quality instruction and interaction. In other words, this is your education. No one can make you succeed in classes or even make you graduate. What we can do is provide an environment that can foster your growth and development. Nonetheless, your education is still all about the choices you make.

  2. These are Your Decisions- realize that there are a lot of choices involved in a college education; what program you should major in, where you should live, what courses you should take, and what activities you should become involved in, to name a few. We also realize that some of these decisions are very difficult or they require a great deal of skill and expertise to wade through all of the options. This is where advising enters the picture. Advising is designed to assist you with the key decisions you need to make regarding your education.

  3. We are Here to Help You Make Good Decisions- realize that there is a lot of information available to you as a student. Many of your fellow students may have specific ideas about how to navigate the system best. While you can receive some good information from your peers, we would also encourage you to seek counsel from those who have designed the system, the goal of which is to transform you into the individual that you want to become; an individual who has been created in God's image and has been given various gifts that can be used to "participate responsibly in our worlds concerns" ( GFU Mission Statement).
