"Those, like myself, whose imaginations far exceeds their obedience, are subject to a just penalty: We easily imagine conditions far higher than we have really reached. If we describe what we have imagined, we may make others, and make ourselves believe that we have really been there - and so deceive both them and ourselves." -C.S. Lewis (as quoted by Marti Ensign / www.renovare.org)

Greetings from the campus of George Fox University and the Office of Spiritual Life. Can you relate to C.S. Lewis' words? When it comes to the faith journey Jesus Christ calls us to, it's so easy to slide into being what Brennan Manning calls "posers, fakers and wannabes." But God has a better plan.

God's desire is to teach us to be both ourselves and alive in him at the same time. The good news is that we don't have to "pretend we're holy," "put on that we're always in the zone with God," or "wear the mask of spirituality." God wants to teach us how to live the "real life" and how to live his life from the inside out.

When we fail, we fail. But when we fail, we also have two choices: We can stay knocked down, or we can take God's hand and the hands of those around us, get back up, and begin again. Learning to see God in the midst of our failure and pain, as well as in the midst of our victory and joy, is a transformation that begins when we courageously take God up on his offer to live "real lives."

T.S. Elliot wrote that far too many people "have the experience but miss the meaning." Let's not let that be said of us. Let's be people who passionately seek the meaning behind, inside, on top of, and under all the experiences of our lives. If this is the kind of life you're looking for, then join us at George Fox University - join us on this journey that will last a lifetime and that will only change everything.

Office of Spiritual Life Mission Statement

The Office of Spiritual Life exists to present the person and message of Jesus Christ to students in ways gentle and bold, creative and caring, so they can pursue a growing relationship with him as their Savior (bringing them to salvation), Master (instructing them in life and godliness) and Shepherd (leading them into his will). All this is done so students can pattern their attitudes and actions, their goals and dreams, and their hearts and minds after those of Jesus Christ.
