As I write this article, only a few days have passed since you left your student at George Fox University to begin the academic year. During Orientation, I enjoyed the opportunity to meet many new parents and see several "veteran" parent friends with returning students. Even though we were bustling with moving in, spending money, and making endless decisions, most people were smiling throughout Orientation. This is an exciting time in your student's life. More... From the Parent Council The prospect of a new school year brings many things, depending on who you are. For returning students, it's a time to get back into the school-year routine and re-establish contacts with friends. Seniors are looking at the wrap-up of college and a transition to career or graduate school. Many first-year students, however, look upon their first year of college with some trepidation. More... From the Vice President of Student Life It's hard to believe we have begun the 2007-08 academic year at George Fox University! It has been wonderful to welcome both new and returning students to a year of learning and growing together. Career Corner A Primer on the Liberal Arts I have coined the phrase "liberally-arted" when I speak with our students who are obtaining a liberal arts degree at George Fox. Some have a keen understanding of what it means and others get that "blank look" when asked about it. Peter Vogt in the College Journal notes, "Liberal arts graduates sometimes don't buy the idea that they have salable skills - especially when they see students in such … majors as computer science, accounting and finance being courted by employers as early as the summer before their senior year." Selah Women's Conference Attention all George Fox mothers! The fourth annual Selah women's conference will be held at George Fox University on Saturday, September 29, 2007. This year the conference is called Uncovering Joy. The conference is about our journey to wholeness, and will help us see ourselves as the beloved of Jesus Christ and as women who live in the freedom of hope, even when we are facing circumstances that threaten to steal our joy. Speakers include Pam Vredevelt, MaryKate Morse, and campus pastor Sarah Thomas Baldwin. Students, alumni, parents and friends are welcome!
