Grad School in Your Student's Future?
Is your student planning to go to grad school after graduation? Do they need some assistance in the admissions process? It is helpful to begin earlier, but here are some general tips and a timeline for seniors:

Senior-Year Timetable for Applying to a Grad School

Summer/September

  • Take the necessary standardized tests for admissions.

  • Finalize your research of grad schools based on important criteria.

  • Learn what it means to be a graduate school student.

  • Gather graduate program brochures and narrow choices.

  • Consider which faculty members to ask for letters of recommendation.

September/October

  • Research sources of financial aid.

  • Carefully examine each of the program applications.

  • Write a draft of your personal essay/statement of purpose.

  • Have your essay proofed by a faculty member or the career counselor.

  • Ask faculty for letters of recommendation. Provide adequate information.

November/December

  • Arrange for your official transcript to be sent to each program to which you apply.

  • Finalize your essays and statement of purpose. Seek input from others.

  • Apply for fellowships and other sources of financial aid, as applicable.

  • Check and record the due date for each application.

January

  • Complete the application forms for each program.

  • Reread your essays and statement of purpose. Spell check!

  • Mail your applications, then relax and breathe.

  • Most schools send a postcard upon receipt of each application. Monitor these. If you don't receive a postcard or letter, contact the admissions office.

February

  • Depending on your field, start planning for the admissions interviews. What questions will you ask? Prepare answers to common questions.

  • Fill out the Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) application. Tax forms needed.

March/April

  • Visit schools to which you've been accepted.

  • Discuss acceptances and rejections with a faculty member or the career counselor at your school.

  • Notify the program of your acceptance.

  • Notify programs that you're declining.
