Home for the Holidays….

By now, many of us parents have arranged to send our son and/or daughter a care package from the Bone to help them make it through the dreaded finals week. Of course, we are very excited to see our kids again, especially for the long holiday break, and these care packages help physically and psychologically in the transition from classes to finals to home. Although we are warmed and heartened to see the gleam in their eyes upon returning home for the holidays, we soon realize their excitement stems from the anticipation of eating some good home-cooked food, and that's just fine. No cafeteria dining for three weeks!

We are anxious to hear all the details about fall semester and their finals-week expectations. Stories of new friends, new professors, new classes, and new experiences fill the airwaves. However, occasionally we have to use some rather creative questioning to get the full scoop (or ply them with some good home-cooked food).

Soon into their stay at home, their focus turns to "catching up" with friends. It's usually during this time we are reminded of the nocturnal lifestyle they now lead as college students. We are happy they are reconnecting with friends, yet still worry when they are out late at night (or is it early in the morning?). In any event, we consider each morning together an opportunity to chat over a cup of coffee, review the day, and, of course, enjoy some good home-cooked food.

Our college-aged kids are becoming more independent, making decisions on their own and taking on new responsibilities. Coming home for the holidays is a poignant reminder that these precious times together are temporary and passing - a very special treasure and gift, to be cherished. And remember this simple fact: When our kids come home for the holidays, we all enjoy a whole lot more good home-cooked food.

May God bless you and your family in extra measure this holiday season as you share in the wonder of the birth of Jesus Christ and the blessings of family and friends. "For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace" (Isaiah 9:6).

Yours in Christ,
