From the Parent
Council
Imagine you’re
on a team of people trying to learn ways to
evangelize others for Christ. How would you
communicate what you know about the Savior to people
who don’t know him? What if they don’t
even know they need him or even care? What would you
do then? What has been done in the past? What worked
and what didn’t? How could you avoid the
clichés of the past?
My
name is Tony Reynolds, and I have the privilege of
serving on the George Fox Parents Council as chair of
the Outreach Committee. While the purpose of our
“outreach” is not eternally significant,
the questions above and more like them still apply,
because in our group, we’re concerned about the
“evangelism” of the university: getting
the word out to people who might be curious or who
haven’t even thought about choosing George
Fox.
The people who are at
the focus of our outreach are mainly prospective
students and parents or guardians of those students.
In a veritable universe of choices, we want to be
there to answer the questions people might have. This
means assisting the admissions office by having
parents at college fairs, regional get-togethers for
students who have been admitted (but may not have
made that “final” choice), and
question-and-answer panels at Bruin Previews, among
other events.
All of us on the
council and committee have students enrolled in the
university, so we want to communicate to prospective
students and their parents that George Fox is a great
school for both the mind AND the heart. But we also
know from experience that these same young people
(and their parents) are taking a huge step –
one that has at least some degree of the unknown, and
one that often generates a lot of questions.
That’s what we
do: give support and answer questions. We’re
part of a group of 35 parents, doing our part to
support a great university. Thanks for reading, and,
if you’re interested, the Parents Council
always has openings for more great people every
fall.
