School is starting! What a great time to get involved!
The 2005-06 academic year is here! This is exciting in many ways. You may be sending your first child off to college or you may have a senior starting his or her final year. Watching our students go to college at George Fox University is a special time for the entire family. We know they are being sent to a place where they will learn academically. More importantly, they learn that who they are is a gift from God and what they make of themselves is their gift back to God. As parents, we have the privilege of knowing that Christian professors surround our sons and daughters, teaching them how to apply academics with a Christian worldview.
My student is a junior this year but it seems like he just started college yesterday. Over the past two years the growth and change in my son has been amazing. I'm confident your families will experience similar change in your sons and daughters. If you really want to see the excitement firsthand, consider becoming involved in campus activities offered to parents. Without investing a lot of time, getting involved will make the college years at George Fox a richer and sweeter experience for both you and your student. It is a way to connect with the university community without getting in the way of your student's personal growth.
Here are the few ways George Fox parents can get involved:
1. Check with the George Fox website for current information and upcoming events (the drama and music productions are awesome, not to mention the championship sports teams).
2. Pray for your children, staff, roommates, and other parents. (You can find a list of prayer concerns at georgefox.edu/parents/services/prayerrequest.html. Submit prayer requests at georgefox.edu/parents/services/submit_prayer.html.)
3. Make sure you register for and attend Family Weekend, Nov. 4-6.
4. Put the Parents Day of Prayer on your calendars now for March 11, 2006. (If you have never attended this type of event, I would encourage you to do so. It is a blessing you will not want to miss. If you would like to host a prayer site in your region let me know by e-mail.)
5. Consider applying for service on the Parent Council sometime during your student's George Fox experience.
I look forward to meeting you during Family Weekend. I'll be praying for a rich experience for both you and your student during the college years. If I can answer any questions or be of help in any way, let me know at the e-mail address below.
God's blessings on the school year for both you and your students,
Rick Hayes
Chairman, Parents Council
