Appendix I: Practical Outcomes Report
My evolving understanding of life and ministry as ontologically relational continues to find new points of integration in my praxis.
Care for the Earth
One of the small surprises borne from my studies is an increased passion to care for our planet. In coming to appreciate the connectedness of all things, I’m increasingly conscious of my symbiotic relationship with all God’s creation. We have taken a more proactive stance on recycling and reusing things that we once might have replaced. We planted a vegetable garden this past this summer in an effort to tangibly force us to connect with the earth. We have also begun a more active resistance to the mostly thoughtless consumerism that marks much of our society.
Success
As a natural byproduct of reinterpreting “church” for the time and place that God has invited me to call home, my understanding of “successful ministry” also continues to demand reinterpretation. In solid modernity, success was more readily quantifiable than it is today. The size of the room or the number of people in seats is an inadequate gauge for measuring the hubbing service I might provide to any nodes in my life.
There are times when I find myself wishing I had never begun to think this way. It can feel like I never know for sure if what I’m doing actually serves God and his people. It can often feel vague. So when I’m asked if what I’m doing is effective, I literally have to answer, “I don’t know.” However, it is also incredibly freeing to thing that God might be using me through so many seemingly weak links.
Hubbing
Understanding my leadership as a hubbing function to those around me has me thinking more intentionally resourcing different people. How can I uniquely connect them meaningfully to ideas, people and organizations that they need to take their next steps? And am I willing to connect the people in my affective community with other people or groups that will likely lead my friends away from dependence on me? I see my ongoing journaling on my web site as a means of hubbing. www.DwightFriesen.com
Clustering
It feels odd to realize that the house church I lead is more of a commons than it is a cluster. Or to discover that my Christ-cluster is an ever morphing sub-set within Quest and with some people who have never participated in the community of Quest. This is expanding my understanding of pastoring to include a pastoral function with people regardless of whether they are part of my community of faith or would even describe themselves as Christ-followers.
Commons
I already see the signs that my community is serving as a Commons. In our seven years of a life together we have now seen at least six Christ-clusters (that we know of) come into existence after connection with and to our community. I find myself wondering about how we could be even more fluid to encourage Christ-clustering, and at the same time, fighting the urge to organize the process of Christ-cluster formation; the Christ-clusters can not be designed, they must evolve.
City Wide Commons
On a local level, the ecumenical-type church-planters group that I have been helping direct for the last year and one-half continues to branch out. In conjunction with Jim Henderson of Off-the-Map Ministries, we will be holding a public discussion for any and all people who, “love Christ but are tired of church” featuring Brian McLaren and Todd Hunter. This will continue in the vein of the Midrash styled conversations, where agreement is not a goal, but open dialogue is the goal.
Denominational Commons
I have initiated further dialogue with the regional office of my denomination to co-explore the creation of an umbrella organization that could service loose Christ-clusters in qualifying for tax exempt status and a Commons-type support structure that might better meet their fluid needs. I have face-to-face meetings scheduled with district leaders in January.
