Rev. Todd Hunter

Alum Todd Hunter named bishop in Anglican Church

The Rev. Todd Hunter, an alumnus of George Fox Evangelical Seminary and an adjunct professor at the seminary, was named a missionary bishop by the House of Bishops of the Anglican Church of Rwanda.

Hunter teaches an evangelism class every other year at the seminary. Now, as a bishop, he will get the opportunity to evangelize in North America on behalf of the Anglican Mission of the Americas organization. The Anglican Church of Rwanda in Kigali, Rwanda, made the announcement of his appointment earlier this month.

Hunter was one of three men elected to the position of bishop. Joining him are the Rev. Canon Doc Loomis, canon missioner for the Anglican Mission, and the Rev. Silas Tak Yin Ng, rector of Richmond Emmanuel in British Columbia.

As a bishop, Hunter will provide oversight for congregations in the Anglican Mission’s West Coast Initiative – Churches for the Sake of Others (C4SO), a church-planting movement committed to planting more than 100 new churches over the next 10 years. The movement is designed to develop churches and leaders committed to beginning new congregations located primarily, but not exclusively, on the West Coast.

Hunter’s appointment will enhance the expansion and kingdom ministry of the Anglican Mission. His passion for, and experience with, planting churches shaped around kingdom-based, missional encounters with contemporary culture will have an extremely significant impact in his region, according to Cynthia Brust, communications director for the Anglican Mission in the Americas organization.

Last year, Hunter transitioned from his role of national director of Alpha USA to launch a new ministry focused on helping pastors and lay leaders reach a generation that has become disenfranchised from the church. Through the new nonprofit Society for Kingdom Living, Hunter developed his writing, speaking and professional activities in the areas of conversational evangelism and the 21st century church.

The Church of the Province of Rwanda is a province of the Anglican Communion, covering nine Anglican sees in East Africa. Hunter, who graduated in 2006 with a doctor of ministry degree in the seminary’s Leadership in the Emerging Culture program, will be consecrated as a bishop with the church in September of 2009.
