MAT Core Course Work
Each MAT degree consists of an identical 36-semester credit sequence of core courses and field experiences. While MAT formats may differ somewhat in course load and sequence, every George Fox graduate earns the MAT degree through the same cohesive and well-articulated program of courses (see brief descriptions below).

Foundational Courses (9 credits)EDUG 501 The Professional Educator: Become a teacher for today's complex world.
EDUG 510 Human Development: Become a teacher who understands students biological, psychological, and social lives.
EDUG 530 Learning Theory: Become a teacher with deep understanding of the nature of teaching and learning.
EDUG 510 Language and Literacy: Become a teacher who understands the role and nature of language and communication in all subject areas and at all ages.
EDUG 503 Exceptional and Diverse Populations: Become a teacher who meets the needs of all children.
Pedagogy Courses (7 credits)
EDUG 502 Structures for Teaching and Learning: Become a teacher with a strong set of instructional strategies and curriculum planning skills in all content areas required to teach. Includes instruction in classroom management, ESOL, Federal and State education policy and multiple intelligences.
EDUG 550 Course Series-Authorization Specific Pedagogy Courses: Become a teacher with in-depth knowledge and training in teaching within specialized content areas. Early childhood/elementary and elementary/middle school teachers take courses in language arts, social studies, science, and math instruction; secondary/middle school teachers take specific content pedagogy courses as well as courses for middle-level education and high school program design.
Integration Courses (18 credits)
EDUG 520, 521, 522 Action Research I, II, & III: Become a teacher who thinks critically, transforms practice, and promotes justice through action research. Demonstrate knowledge and skills learned in course work in designing and implementing curriculum within the context of action research.
EDUG 575, 576, 577 Practicum I, II, II: Become a teacher who applies foundations and pedagogy in the classroom under the supervision of university faculty and a cooperating teacher in the K-12 classroom.
Professional Course (2 credits)
EDUG 590 Graduate Seminar: Become a teacher who understands current trends in education, classroom management, technology, special education, legal issues and other topics. Transition to the profession of teaching by practicing job search skills, resume and portfolio writing, and interviewing
MAT Plus ESOL Course Work
MAT Plus ESOL degree students take an additional four courses (11 semester credit hours) over and above the 36 semester credits required for the MAT degree. This course work is delivered online using an interactive web-based system allowing for thorough interaction between faculty and students. The four ESOL courses are offered during the last four semesters of the program, one course per semester. Full-time format students enrolled in the MAT Plus ESOL degree take their first ESOL course one semester prior to the regular June start date.
MAT Plus Reading Course Work
MAT Plus Reading degree students take an additional five courses (11 semester credit hours) over and above the 36 semester credits required for the MAT degree. This course work is delivered online using an interactive web-based system allowing for thorough interaction between faculty and students. The five Reading courses are offered during the last four semesters of the program, 1-2 courses per semester. Full-time format students enrolled in the MAT Plus Reading degree take their first Reading course one semester prior to the regular June start date.
