Becoming a Secondary Teacher at George Fox University
George Fox University students can get training to become a middle school and/or high school teacher by following a five-year plan, which includes both an undergraduate degree in a field of study and a Master of Arts (MAT) degree in teaching.
Year 1-4
Complete all requirements for a major in art, biology, business, chemistry, family and consumer sciences, health, history (to prepare for the social studies teaching area), mathematics, music, physical education, physics, Spanish, writing/literature, or an emphasis in theatre or speech communication.
- You're encouraged to minor in another subject area
- Take EDUC 250 Teaching as Profession during sophomore or junior years (Fall Semester)
- Begin the application process by contacting Beth Molzahn at 503-554-2264 in the Office of Graduate Admission
- Take the CBEST, ORELA and Praxis II Subject Area(s) test(s) during the junior year or senior year fall semester
- Apply to George Fox University MAT program during January of your senior year
- Must have a GPA of 3.0 for the last four semesters of course work taken
- Must have passed the CBEST, ORELA, and Praxis II test(s) for high school
Year 5
After graduating with a BS or BA and being admitted, begin the MAT program in June.- Complete all education course work and practicum experiences for graduation with an MAT
- Apply for an Oregon teaching license to teach your subject area(s) in middle or high school
