Associate Professor of Accounting

Marley Brown is a Certified Public Accountant with experience in both public and private accounting. Brown was a senior auditor with the Minneapolis office of Peat, Marwick, Mitchell and Co. (now KPMG) specializing in manufacturing, textiles, financial institutions, and nonprofit enterprises. Brown has also spent eight years as a financial officer of two high tech companies. She joined Timberline Systems Inc. in August of 1980, managed the spin-off of three major divisions, and was instrumental in taking the company public. Marley was hired by Graphic Software Systems Inc. in June of 1987 to help position the company for a liquidity event. She retired from her position as vice president of finance and administration and corporate secretary four years later after managing the financial aspects of a merger in order to start her own small business. Brown developed a profitable wholesale distribution company, purchased a competitor, and sold the merged company two years later.

Brown's career has alternated between private business and academia. She has taught accounting and finance courses for 13 years at Washington State University, the University of Montana, Portland Community College, Mt. Hood Community College, and most recently Portland State University. She has also taught abroad at the Free Market Business Institute in Tver and Rostov, Russia, and for a year at the Canberra Institute of Technology in Canberra, Australia.

Brown's primary business and academic interests are in the areas of ethics, management decision-making, financial accounting, investments, teaching techniques, international accounting and finance and teaching abroad. Brown has presented at national and regional conferences on ethics, teaching techniques and teaching overseas.
