It’s a “higher education” term that won’t make sense to most people. But at George Fox University, the legacy program is coordinated by the alumni and undergraduate admission offices to honor the children of alumni* during the recruiting phase and when they enroll at George Fox. It’s our way of celebrating the deep commitment many alumni have to send generations of family members to the place that shaped their lives academically and spiritually, preparing them to encounter the world as whole people.
This program is relatively new at George Fox, so we were all excited to see that the incoming class of 2010 brought with it more legacy students than at any point in history. Out of 484 first year students, 45 were children of alumni. Of the entire traditional undergraduate student body, approximately 9 percent are alumni descendants. We anticipate this number will increase over time. Our goal is to reach 15% legacy enrollment by 2014.
What are we doing differently? Two years ago, the university began providing legacy students with a $500 per year tuition discount, and prioritizing them in the recruiting process. In addition, depending upon GPA and class standing, legacy students may also apply for alumni scholarships each January. These scholarships range from $1,000 to $2,000 for the year awarded. On top of that, parents of legacy students have been receiving tuition credit certificates (up to $500 per child) after submitting the birth information for their children for many years. These are one-time credits that may be used upon entrance to George Fox in combination with the other financial benefits. In effect, if a student enters George Fox University with a one-time tuition credit certificate, annual legacy tuition discount, and is awarded the alumni scholarship, that could amount to $2,000 in financial aid the first year, all because they are a legacy student!
The goal of this program is to increase the number of legacy students at George Fox because we believe a strong legacy enrollment demonstrates confidence in the institution, its education, and its mission.
We sincerely hope that you and your children will consider George Fox. To ensure that your children receive admissions information from the university and are granted the legacy tuition discount, make sure that we have their names and birthdates on file. To do so, just complete the “birth/adoption” section of the What’s New With You form.
