Milan to Vienna

Faculty: Tim Timmerman, Kathy Heininge
Class Meeting Night: Monday

An adventure in beauty, this trip will have us exploring the mountains, lakes, bustling cities, and provincial towns of Italy, Germany and Austria. Palaces, castles, art museums and cathedrals in the Alps and on the Rhine and Danube abound. This trip delves into the art, music and history of Italy, Germany and Austria: their museums, monasteries, landscapes and the intimate charm of their exquisite cities.

Our plane will take us from Portland to Milan, where, boarding a train, we will travel to the Lake District of Italy where Lake Como meets the Alps. Finding our resting place in the Italian storybook town of Varenna, we will take a day trip to Bellagio, as well as to the bustling city of Milan, visiting its Il Duomo and Leonardo Da Vinci’s “Last Supper.”  Still in Italy, we will move on to stay in Verona, the hometown of Romeo and Juliet, where we will be traversing its well preserved Roman ruins and visiting the famed Castelvecchio. From there, we are off to the lederhosen charm of the German alps and the 1936 Olympic city of Garmisch-Partenkirchen and its breathtaking Parnach Gorge.  Traveling to see the famed Neuschwanstein castle, we then arrive in Bavaria’s active and vibrant city of Munich, exploring its extensive art museums, the Nymphenburg Palace, the BMW Museum, and 1972 Olympic park. We will also be taking a day trip to the concentration camp at Dachau.

In Salzburg, Austria, the home of “The Sound of Music,” we’ll encounter the medieval fortress of Hohensalzburg, take a trip in a gondola up into the Alps, and get drenched by the trick fountains of Hellbrunn Palace. Off to the Danube, we stay in Melk, Austria and visit its extensive still-active Abbey. Then we’re off on a day bike trip up the Danube. Ending our journey in the vibrant history-ridden city of Vienna, we’ll ride the city’s trolley around the Ringstrasse to St. Stephen’s Cathedral, see Klimt’s “Kiss” at the Belvedere art museum, and explore the Hapsburg’s gigantic estate, Schonbrunn Palace.

As a class, will be studying the history of musicians such as Mozart and Hayden, as well as the legacy of the Hapsburg dynasty. We will be looking at the architectural history of the region from narrow Renaissance streets, to elaborate Rococo estates, to the contemporary architecture of Hundertwasser in Vienna. We will also be engaging with the not-to-be-missed famous artistic works from artists Albrech Dürer, Han’s Holbein, Brueghel and Gustave’ Klimt.
