This course provides the opportunity to explore the historical and current life and culture of Greece, following the footsteps of the Apostle Paul. In the lands surrounding the Aegean Sea, civilizations have risen and fallen which have shaped world history, religion, art, and culture. Athens is the birthplace of democracy, and Greece is where the events in Homer’s Iliad and The Odyssey took pla:ce. With remote monasteries, historic ruins, three Olympic Stadiums, many beaches, and world-class vistas, visiting Greece is a rich cultural experience. The course will particularly examine the world of classical Greece, centered in Athens. Also, Alexander the Great’s birthplace, and the beginning of Hellenization. And the New Testament era, tracing portions of the missionary journeys of the Apostle Paul through Greece. Furthermore, we will understand the rich religious practices of the Greek Orthodox and Greek Evangelical Churches.

Preliminary Itinerary

Day 1                  Depart for Athens

Day 2                  Arrive in Athens, and drive to Tolo

Day 3                  Epidauros,  Mycene

Day 4                  Visit the island of Spetses and Hydra. Drive to Ancient Olympia

Day 5                  Visit the museum and site of Ancient Olympia, and the original Olympic Stadium

Day 6                 Visit the island of Corfu. Beach time

Day 7                 In Corfu, visit the old city, castle, monastery

Day 8                 Ferry back to mainland, stay in Ioannina. Go to the deepest canyon in Greece

Day 9                 Vergina, visit the tomb of King Philip, Veria (Berea), Katerini

Day 10               Phillipi

Day 11               Thessaloniki, Old City, White Tower, and Byzantine Museum

Day 12               Katerini, Sevasti, Tim’s birth village, visit the museum and site of Ancient Dion. Hike Mount of Oympus.

Day 13               Free afternoon, swim in the Aegean, relax

Day 14               Meteora,  visit the monasteries. Drive to Delphi

Day 15               Delphi, visit Museum and site

Day 16               Drive to Athens

Day 17               Acropolis, Parthenon, visit the 1896 and 2004 Olympic stadiums

Day 18               Corinth

Day 19               Sounion

Day 20               Free day in Athens, get ready for trip back home

Day 21               Depart Athens, arrive in Portland
