Adventure - Art - Culture - Juniors Abroad at George Fox

New Zealand/Fiji

Faculty: Elizabeth Roark, Andrea Alexander
Meeting Time: Th - 6:30 - 9:00 PM

This course will provide an overview of New Zealand and Fijian life and culture and how they compare and contrast. During our time on the North Island of New Zealand we will have the opportunity to experience various cultural sites and activities (cultural centers, museums, historical sites, ect…) as well as exploring the unique geography of the region. Our trip will tour several Maori and Pakeha cultural and historical sites with a closer look at pre and post western influence/settlement and how that impacted/is impacting the indigenous people. The geography of New Zealand is diverse and has a unique flora and fauna that will be observed. It will also allow for many opportunities to engage in outdoors activities such as black water rafting, hiking, and several adventure sports. Following our time in New Zealand, the first 16 days of the tour, we will travel to the island of Fiji. Given the more equatorial climate of Fiji we will have the opportunity to experience a variety of activities that would not have been possible in New Zealand; snorkeling, sand boarding, wildlife preserves, mud baths, and a rainforest trek to name a few. Transportation will include busing, sea kayaks, hiking, boating, and bamboo rafting. We will gain insight into the interesting cultural history of Fiji through various sites and experiences targeted towards that goal. There will hopefully also be an opportunity for a brief service project that is yet to be determined.

There will be a lot of walking on this trip. It is important that you are able to complete a 10 mile hike at the time of travel.
