Faculty: Rebecca Hernandez, Jillian Sokso
Meeting Time: T - 6:30 - 9:00 PM

The purpose of this trip is to enhance the student’s appreciation of the richness found in the history, arts, land, and people of Italy, with a special emphasis given to the art produced during Medieval and Renaissance periods in Italy.   Students will experience a nine city tour which will mingle sites such  as the glorious ruins of the Colosseum, Roman Forum, Catacombs, and Pompeii with the magnificent architecture of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Duomo, St. Mark’s Square, and the Trevi Fountain.  In addition, students will be able to take in the breathtaking art of the masters such as Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper, Michelangelo’s Davidand Sistine Chapel ceiling, and Raphael’s School of Athens. Students will have extended stays in Italy’s internationally known cities of Rome, Venice, Florence, and Milan and well as have time to relax in some smaller, picturesque town such as the costal resorts of Sorrento and Cinque Terra, and the hill town of Assisi.  Finally, but of no small significance, students will be able to enjoy the regional cuisine, for which Italy is well known.  Group meals are often an event that students from previous trips refer to as one of the highlights of this tour.

Preliminary Itinerary

Day 1:   We get up early for an international flight and after about 12 hours arrive in Rome!

Day 2:   We board the Da Vinci express train out of the Airport and arrive in the heart of Rome!   A quick check-in to our hotel and we hit the ground and explore the Coliseum, the Roman Forum, Trevi Fountain and the Spanish steps. We end our  longest day with a delightful dinner out and then sleep hard!

Day 3:  We visit the Vatican and view world famous art and see the fabled Sistine Chapel. After the Vatican, we visit the Borgassi Palace to see more world art and then begin to explore the city on our own.

Day 4:    Rome at your own pace.  You now know how to get around the eternal city so you’ll go out and explore and visit the sites that interest you most! i.e. the catacombs, the Villa Borghese gardens, Piazza Nervona to name a few!

Day 5:  We board a tour bus for the resort town of Sorrento, visiting the amazing ruins of Pompei on the way!   After Pompei, we check into our hotel and explore the beautiful and relaxing resort city of Sorrento and recuperate after our whirlwind first days!

Day 6:   An early ferry ride to the fabled Isle of Capri to explore and visit the charming city and see the beautiful Blue Grotto!

Day 7 - 9:  All aboard the train to Florence! We’ll check into our monastery abode and familiarize ourselves with the Renaissance heart of Italy where for the next 2 days we’ll see the wonders of Michelangelo’s David,  as well as paintings and sculptures by da Vinci, Botticelli, and Bernini, to name a few.  And, I recommend at least one gelato every day as you stroll the quaint streets and see the beautiful churches, reliving the Renaissance and enjoying the food and spirit of Italy.

Day 10 – 11:  Time to slow down again and catch some sun on the beaches and hike the hills of Cinque Terre!   The picturesque hill towns along the magnificent coast, all connected by a train and hiking trail…Relax and explore!   Sounds like its time for a fabulous feast on the beach!

Day 12-14:  Venice, a city like no other!  Build on tiny islands and interconnected with bridges, you will not see or hear a car in the entire city.   St. Mark’s Basilica, along with its square is one of the highlights - get lost in the narrow streets and think like a Venetian!

Day 15-16:  Now for the Italian Alps and the uniquely charming Bavarian town of Bolzano!  Ride the trams to astonishing heights and hike like you’re in Switzerland!   See the famed Ozie, the petrified prehistoric man who was discovered in the melting snow and now is preserved in a state-of-the-art museum exploring pre-historic life.

Day 17 – 19:  Milano, the home of da Vinci’s “The Last Supper,” and the heart of the world’s fashion industry…. We will explore the streets and shops and visit the “Last Supper,” with a bus tour of the city.  Use your newly acquired, “city chops” to explore and shop.
