Veritas in Valparaisoisalogo

Program Overview
This program is offered in collaboration with Veritas Christian Study Abroad at the Pontifical Catholica Universidad Valparaiso (PUCV) in Valparaiso, Chile. Valparaíso is the city of 42 hills. Each of these hills upon which the city is built is a community in itself. Valparaiso and Vina del Mar offer unique opportunities to serve a community and demonstrate God’s love.chile

The beauty of studying abroad in Chile, coupled with the opportunities to serve together with local believers, makes this a great place to live your mission. At the end of the semester, Veritas students will go to Rancagua, Chili, for one week, to partner with a local church to help with outreach and service ministries.

Veritas is a division of  International Studies Abroad (ISA). You will be attending classes with ISA students as well as Veritas students.

Course Content
Students are required to take a course in global missions perspectives and an international missions/service-learning practicum taught by local Veritas staff. The remainder of the courses will be taken at PUCV, including a beginning language class.

Program Fees
Students pay their regular George Fox tuition and room and aboard and continue to receive all of their financial aid.  Due to the high cost of some programs an additional fee may be charged.  The student is responsible for round trip airfare.  There also may be an additional charge for a visa. The fee does include emergency travel insurance.

The student will fill out two applications:
• George Fox off-campus application
Veritas Christian Study Abroad application* (An application fee must accompany your application)
* The Veritas Christian Study Abroad application should only be completed after being informed from the George Fox director of study abroad that you are accepted for an off-campus study semester.

Students must be full-time undergraduates with junior or senior status, holding a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher to apply. Approved for Spanish majors. There is no language requirment for non-Spanish majors.

Because students remain enrolled at George Fox University while participating with Veritas, academic credit is awarded by George Fox. Students will typically take 16 credit hours. Students will be required to attend two pre-departure meetings, complete an online course evaluation, and attend a re-entry meeting upon their return. Sstudents must see the transfer credit specialist in the registrar's office before they begin their semester off-campus.

The Chili Veritas program includes several excursions that are designed to help you gain a more in-depth cultural and historical understanding of Chili. These can include a visit to Chili's capital of Santiago, a visit to Horcon and Playas Del Notre and the beautiful beaches of Zapallar, and optional trips to Pucon for hiking, mountain biking and river rafting, and to Valle Nevado (June to October) for skiing.

Students will live in homes with Chiliean families and be provided with three meals per day (except on Veritas excursion days) and laundry service once per week for the official duration of the program. This is included in the Veritas program cost. Students usually share a bedroom with another Veritas student but have the option of paying extra to secure an individual room.

The student pays George Fox's standard tuition, room and board, and student fees (an additional fee is required to attend some programs). Participants continue to receive financial aid, including scholarships, since they are officially George Fox students. Round-trip airfare is additional.
