What you need to know before coming to Genesis

  • You will be meeting with an academic advisor at Genesis. Each academic department provides academic advisors to help guide you through the process…you’re not alone! You will need to know your mygfu.georgefox.edu user name and password to register for your classes. If you do not know your username and password, please contact your admissions counselor or call the admissions office at 1-800-765-4369 ext. 2240 or 503-554-2240 before coming to Genesis.
  • George Fox functions on a semester system: fall semester, spring semester, and an optional May term.
  • You must earn a minimum of 126 credit hours to graduate from George Fox; 42 of those credit hours must be upper division (300- or 400-level) credits. Most students take approximately 15-to-16 credit hours each semester.
  • All students at George Fox are required to complete a general education core of classes. Most new students complete the bulk of their general education courses in their first two years. Your academic advisor will review these courses with you during your registration time at Genesis.
  • Most students declare their majors during their sophomore year, but you may declare your major at any time.
  • You must take a minimum of 12 credit hours in order to be considered a full-time student and receive the full amount of your financial aid award. Fewer than 12 credit hours could result in the reduction of your financial aid award. You may take up to 18 credit hours—if you exceed the 18 credit-hour limit, you will incur additional charges.
  • All first-year students are required to complete a First Year Seminar course (you will receive a list of options when you arrive for Genesis). First Year Seminar is a one credit hour course that is an extension of the fall orientation experience. Each seminar meets for the first six weeks of the first semester. First Year Seminar is a pass/fail class—if you fail it, it will affect your GPA. You cannot withdraw from First Year Seminar.
