Oregon Preliminary Teaching License + Master of Arts in Education (MAEd)

George Fox University M.A.E.D. program

Earn your teaching license before you graduate

Our Preliminary Teaching License + Master of Arts in Education (MAEd) program in Redmond is our fastest part-time route to becoming a teacher.

Like the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT), this program is designed for people who want to become a teacher and already have a bachelor's or master's degree in a field other than education. Here's how it works:

Phase 1: Preliminary Teaching License

28 semester credit hours
  • 12 months (3 semesters)
    • Summer - Course work (part-time)
    • Fall - Course work (part-time
    • Spring - Student teaching practicum (full-time)
  • Meets face-to-face in Redmond, Oregon 1 to 2 nights each week and 1 to 2 Saturdays each month

Students who complete these three semesters and pass all required state tests will be eligible for recommendation of teaching license. Students do not have to complete Phase 2 to begin teaching.

Phase 2: Master of Arts in Education (MAEd)

8 semester credit hours

After completing Phase 1, students continue at their own pace to complete the MAEd.

  • 4 semester credit hours of action research (required)
  • 4 semester credit hours of selected course work, either:
    • Course work toward a specialist endorsement* in one of the following:
      • English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
      • Reading
      • Special Education
    • OR Course work in other areas, such as:
      • Research in Effective Teaching
      • Curriculum and Assessment
      • Quantitative and Qualitative Research

* The 4 credits of course work offered within the MAEd toward a specialist endorsement are not enough to earn an endorsement, which are 15 to 25 credits in total. However, students can complete their endorsement at George Fox after finishing their MAEd.

MAEd vs. MAT

If you're trying to decide between the Teaching License + MAEd and Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) programs, the choice is mostly a personal preference.

Both have a similar program length and result in both a teaching license and a master's degree. The Teaching License + MAEd will allow you to become a licensed teacher sooner, but the MAT offers a longer student teaching practicum, which can help you gain confidence in the classroom.

You can also decide by just choosing whichever program has the soonest start date: the MAT in Redmond starts in January each year, and the Teaching License + MAEd starts in June.
