Tom's areas of expertise include educational foundations, developmentally informed teaching, and music pedagogy. Prior to his arrival at George Fox in 2009, he served for 12 years as director of music and assistant professor of teacher education at Cascade College, a northwest campus of Oklahoma Christian University.

Before coming to higher education, Buchanan taught for 14 years in Oregon public schools. As a music specialist, he had the opportunity to teach more than 8,000 students, including every grade level (K-12). Under his direction, the high school choral groups in Gladstone, Oregon, grew from just a few students to a large and successful program. Buchanan holds an active Standard Oregon Teaching License in both Basic Elementary General Subjects and K-12 Music.

He earned an EdD in the Educational Foundations and Leadership Program at George Fox.
