The music of Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Poulenc, Brahms, Schubert, Gershwin and Vandall will be featured in the university’s 10th annual Bösendorfer Concert Series.

Performing the pieces will be 18 pianists, comprised of current students, George Fox alumni and pupils from music professor Kenn Willson’s private piano studio.

A 'Monster Piano Concert'

This year's concert will include Bach’s Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring, Beethoven’s March Op. 45 #1, Brahms’ Eight Waltzes Op. 39, Gershwin’s 3 Preludes, Poulenc’s Elegie, Mozart’s Sonata for Two Pianos in D major, K.448, and Schubert’s Military March Op. 51 #1.

The culmination of the evening comes when 12 players simultaneously perform two Robert Vandall pieces on six pianos: Ballad and Jubilation! (Tocatta).

As organizer Kenn Willson describes it, a multi-piano concert – or "monster’ piano concert" – is a rarity. “So much work goes into preparing for it, from securing the pianists, choosing the music, making the repertoire assignments, renting and moving the pianos, and scheduling rehearsals. It is a massive production.”

Bösendorfer Concert Series

The concert, sponsored by George Fox’s music department, has brought in world-renowned classical pianists since its inception in 2007. Past performers have included Baruch Meir, Gianluca Luisi of Italy and Valentina Lisitsa of Ukraine.
