Bon Appetit, the university’s food-service provider, made some recent changes to demonstrate its commitment to be environmentally sensitive in the Bruin Den.
The first change was to replace the clear plastic cups and lids typically used for smoothies and other iced drinks with ones produced with PLA, a corn-based biodegradable, thermoplastic, aliphatic polyester derived from renewable resources such as corn starch. PLA stands for polylactic acid.
Secondly, Bon Appetit replaced its clear plastic take-out containers with Bio-Plus EARTH take-out boxes. They are endorsed by the Green Restaurant Association because they are made from 100 percent recycled paperboard using a minimum of 35 percent or more post-consumer recycled paper content. They are offered for both hot foods and the salad bar.
Both of the products are fully compostible.
