Admission Requirements

Applicants are admitted in the spring to begin nursing school as sophomores the following fall. Applications are processed through NursingCAS and do not open until December. 17, 2018. Click here to start your NursingCAS application. 

The fall 2019 application deadline for all applicants is April 24, 2019

  • Applications are ONLY accepted through NursingCAS (nursingcas.org)
  • Incomplete admission applications will not be reviewed
  • Transfer students must have been granted admission to George Fox University in order to apply to George Fox School of Nursing
    • Running Start Students: Contact the nursing office for specific instructions about your application

You must be accepted to George Fox University prior to submitting your application to the School of Nursing program. Admission to the nursing program is competitive and meeting the admission criteria does not guarantee acceptance into the program. 

Admission Criteria

The following criteria must be met to be eligible for consideration for admission to the nursing program:

Prerequisite Courses

ALL first-year prerequisite classes must be successfully completed (grade of "C" or better) by the end of spring semester in the application year.

  1. General, Organic & Biological Chemistry: one semester with lab (CHEM 151)
  2. Human Anatomy & Physiology: one year with lab (BIOL 221,222)
  3. College Algebra (Math 180); does not include Statistics
  4. General Psychology (PSYC 150)
  5. Intro to Communication (COMM 100)
  6. LIBA 100 Writing Competency or Freshman Composition College Writing

Official Transcripts

All applicants: You will fill out a prerequisite form on NursingCAS as part of your application as well as submit unofficial and official transcripts. NursingCAS will send your official transcript to the university. Any courses not taken at George Fox will be evaluated for equivalency to the prerequisite courses that are offered at George Fox.

Transfer/Second-degree/Running Start students: Before submitting an application to NursingCAS transfer students must be accepted to George Fox University. All transfer courses must be completed by winter term prior to application submission. Running Start students: Please contact the nursing office for specific instructions regarding your transfer courses. 

HESI Admission Assessment Exam (A 2)

Each applicant must complete this mandatory entrance examination.

  • Applicants must bring their own computer when taking the HESI A at George Fox University.  
    • Laptops may be borrowed for the exam by arrangement with the nursing office at least 48 hours prior to the exam

  • Applicants must create an Evolve account prior to taking the exam

  • The HESI A 2 consists of questions pertaining to anatomy and physiology, chemistry, math, reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, critical thinking and questions to determine learning and personality styles.
  • The HESI A 2 can only be taken one time per application period.

The HESI A 2 is offered at George Fox University at the following times:

  • Thursday, March 21, 2019, 5-8 p.m.
  • Thursday, March 25, 2019, 9 a.m. – Noon
  • Thursday, March 27, 2019, 9 a.m. – Noon

The reservation link to take the HESI A2 at George Fox will be live April 2019.

Applicants not able to test on our Newberg campus will need to take the exam at a Prometric Testing Center.  Click Prometric Testing Center to find a location near you. 

Priority Consideration for Admission

Students who entered George Fox University as a freshman may receive consideration for priority admission status by meeting the following criteria:

  • Obtain a 3.3 minimum cumulative grade point average in all prerequisite classes
    • MATH 180, CHEM 151, and A&P BIO 221 & 222, COMM 100, PSYC 150, LIBA 100
  • Obtain a 3.3 minimum cumulative grade point average in math and science classes
    • MATH 180, CHEM 151, and A&P BIO 221 & 222
  • Minimum score of 75 percent on the HESIA2 entrance exam
  • Completion of one essay
  • Completion of two (2) Recommendation and Appraisal forms 
  • Demonstrate evidence of good citizenship and responsibility

Admission to the nursing program for students who meet the above criteria is not guaranteed and depends on the competitive applicant pool from year to year. Once admitted into the nursing program, continuation in the program is not guaranteed.

Regular Admission

The following criteria must be met for admission of George Fox students and transfer/second-degree students:

  • Obtain a 2.9 minimum cumulative grade point average in all prerequisite classes
    • MATH 180, CHEM 151, and A&P BIO 221 & 222, COMM 100, PSYC 150, LIBA 100
  • Obtain a 2.9 minimum cumulative grade point average in math and science classes, including:
    • MATH 180, CHEM 151, and A&P BIO 221 & 222
  • Minimum score of 75% on the HESIA2 entrance exam
  • Completion of one essay
  • Completion of two (2) Recommendation and Appraisal forms 
  • One page resume
  • Demonstrate evidence of good citizenship and responsibility
  • It is strongly recommended that all science prerequisite courses be completed within the last five years, as much of the nursing course work is built on this foundation.

Minimum cumulative prerequisite and math/science GPAs of 2.8 does not guarantee admission into the nursing program. GPA is only one of multiple significant predictors of future nursing school success considered by the nursing admissions committee. Once admitted into the nursing program continuation in the program is not guaranteed.

General Information

General Education Requirements

Nursing students must meet the general education requirements of the university for the Bachelor of Science degree. 

Wait List

A wait list is implemented when there are more qualified applicants than placement capacity for an incoming class. Applicants placed on the wait list are notified by mail. If positions become available to accommodate additional eligible students, the wait list will be activated. Applicants are only on the wait list for the year of application. 

Reapplication

All students reapplying to the George Fox University nursing program must meet that application years admission criteria (cumulative grade point average and completion of prerequisite courses) and follow all steps detailed in the student handbook for readmission. Reapplication does not guarantee admission.

Upon Acceptance into the Program

Students accepted into the program will receive more information in their acceptance packet regarding the following requirements.

  • Criminal Background Check and Mandatory Drug Screen: Final acceptance into the nursing program is contingent upon passing a background check and drug screen.
  • Immunizations: Official documents will be required to validate students are current with all immunization requirements.
  • CPR Certification: Students accepted into the program must have current certification from the American Heart Association. Only a “BLS for Healthcare Provider” program certification will be accepted.
  • Computer: A laptop is not required but is strongly recommended for success in the Nursing program. Click here for the minimum specifications required.
