GFU Students

Students apply in the spring to begin nursing school as sophomores the following fall. Applications are processed through NursingCAS and are not available until December, 17, 2019 at 8:00 am and close April 24, 2020 at 12:00 am. Click here to start your NursingCAS application.

The fall 2020 application deadline for all applicants is April 24, 2020 

  • Applications are ONLY accepted through NursingCAS (nursingcas.org)
  • Incomplete admission applications will not be reviewed

Admission to the nursing program is competitive and meeting the admission criteria does not guarantee acceptance into the program.

Running Start Applicants: Please contact the nursing office for specific instructions regarding your transfer courses.

Admission Criteria

The following criteria must be met to be eligible for consideration for admission to the School of Nursing:

Nursing Prerequisite Courses

ALL first-year prerequisite classes must be successfully completed (grade of "C" or better) by the end of spring semester in the application year.

  1. General, Organic & Biological Chemistry: one semester with lab (CHEM 151)
  2. Human Anatomy & Physiology: one year with lab (BIOL 221,222)
  3. College Algebra (Math 180); does not include Statistics
  4. General Psychology (PSYC 150)
  5. Intro to Communication (COMM 100)
  6. LIBA 100 Writing Competency or Freshman Composition College Writing

Official Transcripts

George Fox University Applicants: Fill out a prerequisite form on NursingCAS and order official transcripts as part of your application. Do not order your official transcripts until 4/15/20.  You must select "hold for Spring grades" when ordering. Any courses not taken at George Fox will be evaluated for equivalency to the prerequisite courses that are offered at George Fox.

Priority Consideration for Admission

Students who entered George Fox University as a freshman may receive consideration for priority admission status by meeting the following criteria.

Complete all nursing prerequisites at George Fox University and fulfill the following:
  • Obtain a cumulative science GPA of 3.30 AND
  • Obtain a cumulative prerequisite GPA of 3.30 
  • Completion of all *prerequisite courses at George Fox University by the end of spring semester of freshman year
    • *High school courses earning college credit equivalent to prerequisite courses are acceptable
  • Students may only repeat one science course one time. In the case where a student has more than one repeat on any science course, only the grade from the first repeated course will be used.
    • A “withdraw” from any science course will be counted as an attempt under this rule. 
  • A maximum of two repeated prerequisite courses is allowed (only one can be a science course)
  • Completion of one essay
  • Completion of two (2) reference forms
  • One (1) page resume 
  • Demonstrate evidence of good citizenship and responsibility
  • Final acceptance is contingent upon passing a background check and drug screen

Admission to the nursing program for students who meet the above criteria is  not guaranteed and depends on the competitive applicant pool from year to year. Continuation in the School of Nursing is contingent upon meeting the minimum requirements for all courses. 

General Admission for GFU Students

Students who entered George Fox University as freshmen but do not meet the priority consideration for admission requirements may receive consideration for admission by meeting the following criteria: 

  • Cum science GPA of 2.75 AND
  • Cum prerequisite GPA of 2.90
    • Acceptance is based on space availability. Meeting minimum requirements does NOT guarantee acceptance to the nursing program. 
    • Application process includes submission of two recommendation forms, a resume, and an essay 
    • Completion of all prerequisite courses by the following deadlines:
      • Courses taken somewhere other than GFU must be completed by Winter term
      • Courses taken at GFU must be completed by Spring semester
  • Students may retake a single science course and/or one general education course (non-science) in order to meet the GPA requirements
    • If a student has more than one repeat on any science or prerequisite course, only the grade from the first repeated course will be used.
    • A “withdraw” from any science course will be counted as an attempt under this rule. 
    • This does not include prerequisite science courses that must be repeated that are more than five years old
  • Completion of one essay
  • Completion of two (2) Reference forms
  • One (1) page resume
  • Demonstrate evidence of good citizenship and responsibility
  • Final acceptance is contingent upon passing a background check and drug screen

Meeting the minimum cumulative prerequisite and science GPAs does not guarantee admission into the nursing program. GPA is only one of multiple significant predictors of future nursing school success considered by the nursing admissions committee. Continuation in the School of Nursing is contingent upon meeting the minimum requirements for all courses. 

General Education Requirements

Nursing students must meet the general education requirements of the University for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. 

Wait List

A wait list is implemented when there are more qualified applicants than placement capacity for an incoming class. Applicants placed on the wait list are notified both by mail and email. If positions become available to accommodate additional eligible students, the wait list will be activated. Applicants are only on the wait list for the year of application. 

Reapplication

All students reapplying to the School of Nursing must meet that application years admission criteria (cumulative grade point average and completion of prerequisite courses). Reapplication does not guarantee admission.

Upon Acceptance into the Program

Students accepted into the School of Nursing will receive more information in their acceptance packet regarding the following requirements.

  • Criminal Background Check: Final acceptance into the nursing program is contingent upon passing a criminal background check.
  • Mandatory Drug Screen: Final acceptance into the nursing program is contingent upon passing a drug screen.
  • Immunizations: Official documents will be required to validate students are current with all immunization requirements.
  • CPR Certification: Students accepted into the program must have current certification from the American Heart Association.
    • Only an American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Provider certification is accepted.
  • Computer: A laptop is required for success in the Nursing program (Chromebooks and tablets are not acceptable). Click here for the minimum specifications required.
