American Studies Program
Washington DCProgram Overview
The American Studies Program, sponsored by the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU), is designed for juniors and seniors with a wide range of academic majors and vocational interests. Students are involved in the American Studies Program for periods of three or four months. The internship/seminar opportunity is available starting in September and in January.
The American Studies Program was created to provide field experience and study opportunities in Washington, D.C., for diverse majors and personal interests. The program is based on the principle of integrating faith, learning, and living through both a real-life work experience and a study program. Students spend their time in Washington serving as interns, participating in a contemporary, issues-oriented seminar program, and living in a small Christian community. Internships are available in congressional offices, social service agencies, think tanks, cultural institutions, and many other organizations. Application
The student will fill out two applications:
• George Fox off-campus application
• ASP application
*The ASP application should only be completed after being informed from the Director of Study Abroad that you are accepted for an off-campus study semester.
Students must be full-time undergraduates with junior or senior status, holding a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher to apply.
Because students remain enrolled at George Fox University while participating at the LAFSC, academic credit is awarded by George Fox. Students will typically take between 15-16 credit hours. Students will be required to attend two pre-departure meetings, complete an online course evaluation, and attend a re-entry meeting upon their return. Students must see the transfer credit specialist in the Registrars office BEFORE they begin their semester off-campus.
Only eight blocks from the U.S. Capitol and Supreme Court, ASP students live in the Dellenback Center which houses seven student apartments, as well as an apartment for ASP's on-site residence life staff. You’ll stay in a fully-furnished, two-bedroom apartment for four to six students, complete with a well-equipped kitchen, a washer and dryer, and free local telephone and voicemail service.
The student pays George Fox's standard tuition, room and board, and student fee. (Some programs will have and added additional fee ). Participants continue to receive financial aid, including scholarships, since they are officially George Fox students. Round trip airfare is additional.
