DESCRIPTIONIreland
Students will explore the development of the Christian faith in the cultures of Ireland and England from Celtic times to the present.  Students will also experience the beauty of the culture and geography of Ireland and England.  Two of the greatest Christian intellectuals of the twentieth century, J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis, will receive special attention, including sites associated with their lives.  The tour will include the cities of Dublin, Belfast, Oxford, and London and such notable sites as the Irish high crosses, Bath, Stonehenge, the University of Oxford, Salisbury Cathedral, and the myriad sites in and around London. 

PRELIMINARY ITINERARY

Day 1  Flight Portland to Dublin

Days 2-5  Dublin

Includes visits to Trinity College, site of the ancient Book of Kells, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, sites related to the Irish Easter Uprising of 1916, and the National Gallery of Ireland.  Possible daytrips include Clonmacnois, site of the greatest of the medieval Irish high crosses, and County Wexford, home to great Irish castles.

Days 6-8  Belfast

Includes the Titanic Belfast Museum, St. George’s Market, and various sites connected with the young life of C. S. Lewis. 

Day 9  Flight Belfast to London, arrive in Southampton

Day 10 Southampton, day trip to Portsmouth

National Museum of the Royal Navy, a spectacular collection of ships and activities, including the HMS Victory, the Mary Rose, and a tour of Portsmouth Harbor.

Days 11-13  Salisbury

Possible day trips to Bath, Stonehenge, includes the Roman baths, constructed in 70 A.D., Salisbury Cathedral, the tallest medieval cathedral in England, and the Jane Austen Center.

Days 14-16  Oxford

One of the most famous university towns in the entire world is a place of natural beauty, historic pubs, and the place where Tolkien and Lewis spent their teaching careers.  Includes a possible day trip to Warwick Castle.

Days 17-21  London

Includes numerous London sites such as the Imperial War Museum, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, the Churchill War Rooms, the National Gallery, St. Paul’s Cathedral, and the Globe Theater.  There will be many opportunities to attend a production on the London stage, including Shakespeare at the Globe.  Possible day trips to Windsor Castle, home of the royal family, and Cambridge University.

Day 22  Return flight London to Portland
