George Fox University offers a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree program that encourages students to integrate their faith into their careers. As one of only three Oregon MSW programs and the only Christian school in Oregon to offer this degree, George Fox focuses on giving students the resources and skills they need to begin or continue a career in social work. Our program is nationally accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) and offers many opportunities for students to gain real-world experience.

About the Program

Our program is full-time and located at our Portland Center near Tigard. Classes generally meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the day with occasional seminars and workshops on evenings and Saturdays. This leaves room for students to focus field experience hours on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Advanced Standing

For students who have already completed a qualified bachelor’s degree in social work (BSW), we offer Advanced Standing, which takes just nine months to complete instead of two years. Ask an MSW counselor for more details regarding Advanced Standing if you think you might qualify.

Concentrations

The MSW at George Fox University has two advanced practice concentrations:

  • Direct practice with families, children, individuals and groups
  • Community practice (organizations and development)

These concentrations allow students to work toward what they are passionate about and help refine the specific skills they will need to work in those areas.

Internships & Field Experience

At George Fox, we value the importance of field experience. Students are placed in a field internship in a social service agency or program that matches their professional interests with both on-site and faculty supervisors to mentor and coach them. This gives students the chance to apply what they have been learning in the classroom to the real world, developing skills and knowledge in a much deeper way. Our two-year program requires a minimum of 1,080 hours in a supervised internship and Advanced Standing students must complete at least 600 hours.
