George Fox University Coronavirus (COVID-19) Response

Seminary announcements

Portland Seminary is monitoring the international and domestic response to the coronavirus and has taken proactive steps to deliver on our educational promise as outlined below.

We realize that this is unsettling, especially in the midst of challenges in your ministry, financial uncertainty as well as health concerns for both students and their loved ones. Please know that the students of Portland Seminary are in our prayers, and we want to walk beside you as you lead your own faith communities through this crisis.

Spring 2020 Semester

  • All classes online for rest of semester: In accord with the rest of the university, the seminary will be moving ALL classes to remote format for the rest of the spring semester. This only impacts our Monday traditional masters-level classes. Your professor will give you more information on specific expectations for each class. Classes will still end on May 1 as scheduled.
  • Graduation/Commencement: The university has mandated to not hold in-person commencement this May. In our recent survey, the vast majority of graduates (more than 80%) would rather postpone the graduation ceremony to a later date so that we can celebrate in-person instead of trying to hold it remotely. We are working on plans to hold commencement at a later date, but any decisions will be dictated by how the situation evolves in the coming weeks and months. Know that it is our desire and intention to celebrate each of you and your hard work. We are working on alternative plans and will share updates as we have them.
  • Library Services: The library has moved to fully remote status, similar to other Alliance and public libraries. You still have access to library support, though through a combination of remote meetings with librarians, digital acquisitions and mailing materials.
  • Portland Center Campus: The Portland Center is closed to students and outside community members.

Summer 2020 Semester

  • Masters Studios: All summer courses will run fully online. More information regarding the summer schedule is at class.georgefox.edu.
  • Summer 2020 Semiotics, Church, and Culture DMin Advances moved online: The Orcas Advance (Cohort 17, May 25-29) and Cambridge Advance (Cohort 18, June 17-22) for the Semiotics, Church, and Culture Doctor of Ministry program will be moved to an alternative online experience on the originally scheduled dates. All face-to-face events are canceled.

Fall 2020 Semester

  • We are prepared to adjust Advance experiences as necessary to ensure student and faculty safety in the event that the rapidly evolving COVID-19 crisis continues.
  • We will be prepared to offer WaterFront Orientation (for new masters program students) online, if needed. Any changes in plans for an in-person orientation will be communicated in a timely manner.
