Dr. Nam Accepts New Position

A Message from Dean Nam:

Dear Portland Seminary Community,

It is with great sadness that I announce to you that after twelve years, I will be leaving George Fox University. After two years serving as Dean, I felt the nudge to be open to new opportunities. After a lengthy process and period of discernment, I have accepted an invitation to join the faculty of the Candler School of Theology of Emory University as Professor of Hebrew Bible. I will begin this appointment in Fall 2020 and this summer, I will be moving to Atlanta with my family.

I will always be so deeply grateful for my time at Portland Seminary and George Fox University. I began here in the Fall 2008 as Assistant Professor of Biblical Studies fresh from completing my PhD thesis. I now leave with many cherished memories and treasured relationships. Even in the midst of COVID-19, I am grateful to leave the seminary in a position of health. Despite the disruptions of COVID-19, our enrollments are strong in all seminary programs. We are the most ethnically diverse seminary faculty in North America. In the last five years, the seminary has won over $3M in grants and we have two more grants pending. Most importantly, we have renewed a deep commitment to the thriving of the church via the integration of theology and practice.

We are working on a succession plan, and we will be making the announcement soon.

In the wider scope of life, I look forward to continuing to partner with you in service for the gospel, albeit in a different capacity. I ask for your prayers as I make this transition. You will have mine.

Gratefully,

Roger
