Portland Seminary is pleased to announce that Dr. Melissa Ramos will be joining the seminary full-time faculty as assistant professor of biblical studies, effective immediately.

Dr. Ramos obtained her PhD from UCLA in 2015 in Classical Hebrew and Northwest Semitic Languages. Her book Ritual in Deuteronomy: The Performance of Doom is forthcoming with Routledge. She also is co-editing a volume with Dr. Laura Quick, titled New Perspectives on Ritual in the Biblical World with T & T Clark. Dr. Ramos has been a faculty member with the College of Christian Studies since 2017. She is ordained as a Minister of Word and Sacrament with the Presbyterian Church (USA). Prior to coming to George Fox, Dr. Ramos was an associate pastor at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Wichita, Kansas and she has also taught at UCLA and Fuller Theological Seminary.

Concerning her new appointment, Dr. Ramos states, “I am brimming with excitement to bring my passion for the Church and a deep study of the Scripture to Portland Seminary. I look forward to bringing more of my energy to serve this diverse community of students. As an Old Testament scholar, I view teaching as an opportunity to engage our intellect by entering the world of the Bible, and to engage our heart and imagination by interpreting its profound depths for a world in need of the hope of Christ.”

Dr. MaryKate Morse, incoming Dean of the Seminary says, “I am so pleased that Dr. Ramos will be joining the seminary faculty. All my interactions with her as an Old Testament scholar, as a person who loves the church, and as someone who understands the integration of critical thinking and the praxis of influencing have generated in me a high respect for Dr. Ramos. Her prophetic witness to God’s concerns is an important voice for those preparing to serve God’s mission in the world.”

Although Dr. Ramos has been teaching at Portland Seminary since 2018, her fulltime move to the seminary will help reinforce our deep commitment to congregational ministry. She will be teaching courses in biblical studies and will serve as faculty advisor to the student group, Sem.Sisters.
