When It’s Time For Change…
By Robby Larson, Director of Alumni Relations

The start of the 2010-11 academic year brings with it significant changes in Alumni Relations. In the coming months, you will begin to see and hear about new events, new opportunities for engagement, new communication tools, and a number of other new initiatives, some of which are highlighted in this issue of eBruin. The Alumni Relations staff is working hard to make it easier than ever before for you to stay connected with George Fox University and other alumni. And speaking of our staff, that’s changed too!  More…

From the Alumni Board
By Rick Brumble

Rick Brumble It is an honor and privilege to serve as president of your Alumni Association and board of directors representative of the School of Professional Studies. My non-traditional school experience in the cohort model is a bit different from those who attend classes in Newberg. Groups in the cohort model begin and end the program together, while holding down jobs, families, and other obligations. As I witnessed during SPS graduation banquets, significant others willingly take the reins and hold everything together during the program. More…

George Fox University’s Legacy Program
By Sheri Philips, Executive Director of University Relations

Sheri Philips It’s a “higher education” term that won’t make sense to most people. But at George Fox University, the legacy program is coordinated by the alumni and undergraduate admission offices to honor the children of alumni* during the recruiting phase and when they enroll at George Fox. It’s our way of celebrating the deep commitment many alumni have to send generations of family members to the place that shaped their lives academically and spiritually, preparing them to encounter the world as whole people. What Could Be Better Than New Shoes?
By Angela J. Doty, Associate Director of Career Services

Angela DotyWhen I was a little girl, new shoes were a big deal. We’d barely make it to the car and those new shoes would be on my feet. Sometimes, I would be permitted to wear them out of the store. Either way, once we arrived home, I would dance and parade around in my new shoes, testing out the clip-clop sound on the kitchen floor or their speed as I raced down the hall. My mother drew the line when I would attempt to sleep with them on. More...

A Big Change for Homecoming
homecomingThe next time you visit campus for homecoming, you’re sure to notice that something’s different. That’s because our annual alumni celebration is moving to the fall! After several years of study and discussion with university leaders, the alumni board decided to make the switch in 2011. Instead of occurring in February, Homecoming 2011 will take place on campus Oct. 7-9. Along with the change in timing comes an overhauled schedule of events that will allow for greater alumni connection and stronger reunions. Watch for more information about the completely redesigned Homecoming 2011 in the weeks and months to follow. We can’t wait to welcome you home once again!

This shift also paves the way for an all-new alumni event called Bruin Madness being developed around the George Fox basketball games on Feb. 5. You can read more about Bruin Madness in the events section below.

Record Enrollment
George Fox University broke its enrollment record this fall and welcomed a freshman class with the best academic credentials since 2003. A record 3,484 students – including 655 new traditional undergraduate students – enrolled in the university this fall, marking a 3.3-percent increase over last year’s 3,368 total. George Fox also continued its recent trend of enrolling more students from diverse racial and economic backgrounds. To read more, click here.

National Leader in Study Abroad
With more than half of our undergraduates participating in international experiences, George Fox University is a national leader in providing study abroad and international outreach opportunities to its students. Fifty-four percent of the university’s traditional undergraduates study abroad before graduation. To read more, click here.

Alumni can cheer on the outstanding George Fox basketball teams and attend a number of other family-friendly events including a tailgate party, a family fun zone, and a young alumni night at Abby’s Pizza. Bruin Madness also includes the 2011 Bruin Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony. More information will be available later this fall, but for now make sure to save the date: Feb. 5, for Bruin Madness 2011!
