What is defragging?

Defragging is short for de-fragmenting your hard drive or getting rid of all the fragments. Your hard drive - the main place where information stored, is like a file cabinet. Your computer takes things out of the proverbial file cabinet to access the information, but does not necessarly put everything back in order. Defragging your hard drive organizes your files which makes your computer run more efficiently. It is a good idea to defrag your hard drive about once every six months.

How to defrag

To defrag, click on the Start bar. Go to Programs, then to Accessories, then System tools, and there you will find Disk Defragmenter. After single clicking on that, the defraging program comes up where you just click the "Defragment" button to begin. It can take a while (up to an hour or longer) depending on how cluttered your hard drive is.
