When you start using your computer on the George Fox Network there are several things that you will have to do right off the bat.
Make sure you have your ethernet card plugged into your machine and into the wall
Right-click on your "my computer" icon and then click on properties
Next click on the "Computer Name" tap up at the top and click on the "Network ID" button
A little menu will come up that directs you to continue. After you click continue there will be two choices to choose from. Choose the option that says: "I am on a business network and use this network to connect to other computers".
After you continue there will be another two choices. Choose the one that says "My company uses a network without a domain.
Continue and either join a group that already exhists or create a brand new workgroup entitled whatever you wish. And you should be done connecting yourself to the network.
Setting up A local printer
For a college student setting up a printer can be necessary to survival. the most commonly used printers are local printers, aka printers that plug into the back of your computer and only you have access to.To set one up will only take a minute or so at the most.
First make sure your printer is plugged in and that the printer cable runs from the printer into the back of your computer
Next click on your start bar at the bottom left hand corner of your screen and go to the settings tab.
From there go to the printers button and double click on it. It will bring up a menu with the option to add a printer.
There will be a box telling you to continue. After you continue there will be two choices. Choose the option that says to look for a local printer (make sure that the little box underneath that says to look for plugged in "plug n play" devices is checked as well).
If you are using windows xp most likely the program will find and install the right drivers. otherwise there will be a button that says "have disk" and you will need to install the right drivers from the disk.
After that is done you can hit the finish button and you have installed your printer.
Setting up a Network printer
Setting up a network printer is almost as easy as setting up a local printer. The only difference is that you are connecting to a printer that is put up on the network for multiple users to connect to. These are mostly office printers.
To do this follow steps 1-2 as described above. starting on step 3 comes the differences of setting up.
Instead of checking the box that says to look for a local printer choose the other one, which says "a network printer or a printer attached to another computer"
From here you choose to setup a new TCP/IP port and add the IP number of the printer.
Next you will have to install the drivers from the disk or choose from a list of available drivers as described in step 5 from Setting up a local printer. Click finish and you should be done.
