How to Connect to the Wireless Network

Wireless networking is expanding at GFU! If your computer has the ability to connect to wireless networks then we've got plenty of options to get you online without being anchored to a wall jack.

  • What it is: a cordless connection from your computer to a wireless "base station"

  • Where it is: Entire Portland campus. On the Newberg campus: Woodmar (admin network), Bruin Den (including limited areas immediately outside the building on the Quad side), EHS Atrium, Edward Stevens Center, MLRC (Newberg Library), Hoover 104, and the FoxHole. All student houses (that's houses, not apartments/suites/rooms) have wireless networks in place except Beals, Chapman, McGrew, and Weesner (these houses, plus the rest of residential housing, have Ethernet networks). Also, many businesses including our local coffee shops offer wireless networking to customers. Wireless Access Map

  • How to connect: You will need a wireless-equipped computer (either built-in or via a wireless card) that uses 802.11b or 802.11g. Connecting isn't automatic, so please read the following:

    1. WEP key: Our network is encrypted to ensure that only our students and employees are using it. As you configure your computer for wireless, you'll need to enter a WEP key before you can connect. Log in the Bruindata and look on the first page, or contact the Service Desk to get this key. (You can log in from a lab, library or kiosk computer to get the WEP key.)

    2. NetReg: The first time you connect from a GFU public access location you will be directed to the NetReg process to register your computer. You must register before you can use the network. Simply follow the directions given and enter your Bruindata username and password, or click on the link in this paragraph for more information.

    3. NOTE: If your computer previously connected from home via modem, DSL, or other means, you may have to reconfigure your computer for the GFU network. See our wireless troubleshooting page or bring your computer to the Service Desk
