Downloadable Software

This page lists free software that IT encourages you to consider downloading.  Do not download them all!  Take a look at the list and decide which program(s) you need for your academic or personal use.  Other options exist on the Internet, but it can be difficult to know which are truly useful and which are truly dangerous.

System Protection

Every computer should be running a good anti-virus program and a good anti-malware program.  Often one program can do both.  Some of these programs are "always on" to constantly protect your computer.  You should never run more than one of these "always on" programs at a time as it can lead to conflicts and slow down your computer.  We recommend:

Microsoft Security Essentials (Windows, always on) takes care of both viruses and malware.  This is our first suggestion for Windows users, and you shouldn't need anything else unless/until you experience a problem.

AVG Free (Windows, always on) is our second choice for both viruses and malware.  Remember - don't install two "always on" security programs on the same computer.

Malwarebytes (Windows) is anti-malware only.  It can be run manually so you can use it if you are experiencing problems despite having an "always on" program already installed and running.

Note for Apple users: at this time IT does not have a recommendation for system protection for Apple OS computers.  We agree with Apple, however, that it is best to have an antivirus program for your Apple computer.  Apple officially recommends Avast! Free Antivirus

Academic Software

The following programs are recommended to support your academic work at the university.  They may also be helpful for work or personal use.

Mozilla Firefox. You need a second web browser on your computer and this is our recommendation for Windows and Apple.  When one browser stumbles on a site try the other browser before calling for help - in many cases this will get you around the problem.

Adobe Reader. You need to be able to view PDF files and Adobe is still the standard.  Apple OS users can rely on Apple Preview (which is already on your computer) or you can add Adobe Reader for Mac - your choice.  Be aware it will try to install Google Toolbar unless you uncheck that box during the install.

Adobe Flash Player. You may need or want to view Flash video and this is the program to do it.  NOTE: For best results click on this link from each of your web browsers (i.e. once in Internet Explorer or Apple Safari, then again in Mozilla Firefox).  Be aware it will try to install Google Toolbar unless you uncheck that box during the install.

QuickTime: You may need or want to view QuickTime (.mov) video.  QuickTime is also needed to support iTunes and iTunesU.

iTunes. You don't have to have iTunes but it will make using iTunesU (a university resource for video delivery) much easier.  We suggest you uncheck the two check boxes on the page before downloading, unless you like getting emails from Apple.  Note: if you chose to install iTunes you will automatically have QuickTime installed as well.

Adobe Shockwave is another media player you might need.  Be aware it will try to install Google Toolbar unless you uncheck that box during the install.
