There are many freeware programs (and others licensed by George Fox) that are available here for you to download that are extremely useful when using your computer. Some of them are great for keeping your computer clean and safe from programs that could possibly harm it. Others are just commonly used programs that will be helpful in your day-to-day operations.

Symtanec Antivirus is your friend Remember that. Update it and run scans on your computer frequently. It makes it much less likely that that your computer could be infected with a virus and, in a worst-case scenario, need to be completely wiped and installed fresh, losing all of your files.

Another important program to run frequently is Ad-Aware. Ad-Aware is a little program that deletes spyware and tracking cookies from your machine. Spyware is a name for little programs that download themselves to your machine without your knowledge when you use the Internet. They can latch onto your computer and seem harmless (and some are), but the majority of them are harmful. Some of these infect your computer with little pop-up ads; some add sites to your favorites list. Some even install programs whose sole purpose is to eat up your running power (memory, CPU). The build-up of spyware can eventually cause major problems to the best of computers.

For some programs you can either click the internal link and download the program straight over the network or click the external link and download it directly from the manufacturer's Web page.

Adobe Reader: Opens .pdf files. External

Mozilla Firefox 1.0.4: Another browser alternative. Includes built-in popup blocking and tab browsing. External

Netscape 7.1: Another popular Web browser. External

Opera 8 (for Windows): A Web browser for those who like to kill pop-up ads or just want a variation from the norm. External

Opera 7.52 (for Mac): Same as the above but for Macintosh computers. External

PowerPoint Viewer 2003: A viewer for all Powerpoint files (.ppt or .pps). External

Quicktime 6.5 (Windows): A program for playing Quicktime videos (.mov files). External

Quicktime 7 (Mac): Same as above for Macintosh computers. External

TextPad 4.7.3: A little writing pad that is great for all you Web programmers. External

WS-FTP LE: A good free FTP client. External

Winrar 3.42: A slightly more versatile unzipping tool that unzips .rar files as well as .zip files. External

WinZip 10: A handy unzipping tool. External
