EDFL 515PA:  Proportionality and the Solar System (2 sem cr.) Deepen understanding of proportions and scaling in one, two, and three dimensions through a problem-based construction of the solar system.  ODE science standards taught include earth-moon-sun and solar system.  Students will construct using observational data and geometric techniques the size of the earth, the sizes and distance relationships in the earth-moon-sun system, and the size and scale of the solar system.  Students will discuss classroom teaching applications and plan for implementation of inquiry pedagogy.

Integrated Practice Aug 11-15, 2008
EDFL 515PB:  Developing Mathematical Ideas: Building a System of Tens (2 sem cr.) Explore the base ten structure of the number system and how that structure is used in multi-digit computation. Investigate how basic concepts of whole numbers reappear when working with decimals. Student thinking is at the center of this course through examination of student work and students at work (written and video cases). (math content two-module set)

EDFL 515C:  Developing Mathematical Ideas: Patterns, Functions, and Change (2 sem cr.)  Discover how the study of repeating patterns and number sequences can lead to ideas of functions, learn how to read tables and graphs to interpret phenomena of change, and use algebraic notation to write function rules. With a particular emphasis on linear functions, explore quadratic and exponential functions and examine how various features of a function are seen in graphs, tables, or rules. Student thinking is at the center of this course through examination of student work and students at work (written and video cases). (math content two-module set)

EDFL 515X:  Physics for Educators (3 sem cr., online)  Course will adopt the “How Everything Works” model of teaching physics concepts, using exploration of the working of everyday objects and processes to provide opportunities for inquiry.  Concepts will include force and motion, heat, waves/sound/light, and electromagnetism.

Science Focus Fall 2008

EDFL 515X:  Seasons, Data, and Predictions (2 sem cr.)  Students will analyze data collected with planetarium software, make predictions and design inquiry activities to test those predictions. Students will analyze data and communicate findings using multiple representations employing digital tools (e.g., Tinker Plots, Inspire Data). Students will discuss classroom teaching applications and plan for implementation of inquiry pedagogy. (Integrated math/science)
