Selection Of Students

George Fox students:

The initial screening will be done in the same way as our current selection process, i.e. a faculty/administrator committee will meet after the January deadline and determine which of the applicants should be approved by George Fox to participate in some type of semester-off-campus program. Factors in this screening are the impact on the George Fox budget, the student's interest in and aptitude for the kind of programs they have selected, and the strength of the faculty references.

Selection of students from George Fox and other institutions for this specific program:

Once George Fox approves a student for studying off campus, he or she is then eligible to apply to the programs that interest them. Each of the current programs to which George Fox sends students has its own selection programs. In the case of the CCCU programs, there is an online application process, but the decisions are made by the staffs of the respective programs.
The director of the South American Studies Program, Ron Stansell, will convene a selection committee to review all applicants and make decisions. There might be overlap with the general George Fox selection committee, but not necessarily. While it is assumed that George Fox students will have a higher priority than other students, the comparative aptitude and suitability of the applicants might result in the committee declining to accept some George Fox applicants.

Application Cycle

  1. Students will apply to George Fox for study off-campus as they do now. This happens on the Friday of the first week of spring semester (Jan. 11 in the case of 2008), and this is for study off-campus the following academic year. The committee meets within 10 days of that deadline and notifies students of the decision. Note that there is not a different deadline for the following fall and spring.
  2. Application to the South American Studies Program: The deadline will be the same as for most of the CCCU spring programs (Oct. 15). However, students are encouraged to apply as soon as they are approved by their respective institutions and the director will convene the selection committee periodically to make decisions and notify students without a lot of time passing after they apply. As is the case with CCCU programs, students pay an initial $50 non-refundable application fee and a $200 nonrefundable confirmation fee after being accepted. The confirmation fee is applicable to program costs, i.e. it is deducted from the total student cost.
