Mission
The mission of George Fox University's study abroad program in Bolivia is to provide a semester-long experience for students desiring to enrich their understanding, skills and appreciation for cross-cultural ministry and service in an evangelical Christian context. This focus will be specifically on the South American continent, but the program will draw on principles that are applicable globally.Overview
- The program, the first of its kind at George Fox University, began in the spring semester of 2006. It is open to all students who attend Council of Christian Colleges & Universities member institutions.
- Students spend their four-month spring semester studying at the Bolivian Evangelical University (Universidad Evangélica de Bolivia, or UEB). With the exception of the Spanish language course, the courses are conducted primarily in English.
- Studies concentrate on the history, geography, religion, politics, economics, and cultural diversity of South America.
- An emphasis is placed on Christian ministry, missions, and establishing a positive attitude toward the value of human life over economic or educational accomplishments.
- Students develop their Spanish-speaking skills, build relationships with people from another country, and further their learning and appreciation of South American culture.
- Major field trips will be taken to LaPaz/Cuzco, Peru, Sucre/Potosí, Bolivia, and Iguazu Falls/Buenos Aires, Argentina, in support of academic courses.
Curriculum
Studies consist of a 16-credit program, featuring courses in the Spanish language (4 credit hours), religions of South America (3 credit hours), history of Latin America (3 credit hours), cultures and customs of South America (3 credit hours), and practicum in service of ministry (3 credit hours).
