Advancing STEM Through Ed

A Summer Workshop

This course will provide learning experiences for third and fourth grade teachers in the practices of engineering design as applied to a select number of core ideas in physical science as described in the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and connected to the automotive industry. Participants will learn the three dimensions of the NGSS and how they influence learning targets, instructional strategies, and assessment. A key part of the course will focus on how to instruct and assess student progress towards the engineering components of the standards. Teachers will learn the Phenomenon-Based Learning Model and other culturally responsive practices to support all students in becoming STEM curious, capable, and confident in their everyday lives. Also, information and resources on how to access community partners to better support STEM education and careers will be presented. Participation includes free entrance and exploration of World of Speed's interactive exhibits.
