From the Vice President of Student Life
It's hard to believe we have begun the 2007-08 academic year at George Fox University! It has been wonderful to welcome both new and returning students to a year of learning and growing together. Undoubtedly, God has great things in store for each of us this year, and we are grateful for your partnership in supporting your student during his or her time here.
Every year, a group of students and staff decides on a university-wide theme for the coming year. This year's theme is "Mind & Spirit," which you've probably already seen on a number of university publications. It symbolizes the truly integrative nature of what George Fox University seeks to accomplish in the lives of students. While we obviously care deeply about the life of the mind and our academic rigor, we also believe that our Christ-centeredness and an emphasis on spiritual formation bring coherence to life and learning.
Our new president, Dr. Robin Baker, loves to quote C.S. Lewis from his sermon entitled The Weight of Glory. Lewis writes, "I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen, not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else." This is an apt description of what we believe and teach at George Fox. From classes to the dining hall to the residence hall to Serve Day, our hope is that students find meaning and significance in their experiences here. It is an honor and privilege to see the minds and hearts of students shaped by peers, faculty members, staff members, and the broader community during their years at the university. God has great things in store for us this year as we are challenged and stretched in both "mind and spirit."
