Software

Office Suite (Collection of software programs that enable computer to process word documents, spreadsheets, media presentations, e-mail communication, etc.)

Microsoft Office 365 is provided to all students.  To download MS Office 365:

  • Go to login.georgefox.edu and sign into your GFU single-sign-on account.
  • You’ll see an option to select the Microsoft Office 365 Office Portal - click on that to launch.
  • A new window will open up that should have your George Fox email address at the top and ask if you would like to stay signed in - select your option.
  • After you log in you will then see the option near the top right to Install Office - click on it and walk through the prompts to download the software onto your computer.
  • Note: If you are not registered for a class, you will no longer be able to access your student version of Office 365. For this reason, we recommend always saving your documents to your personal device.

Browser (Program that allows computer to connect to the Internet)

  • Required: Firefox plus one other browser (such as Google Chrome for Windows or Mac, Edge for Windows)
  • Firefox is the recommended browser for George Fox University.

Anti-Virus (Software designed to protect your computer from viruses, malware, and other malicious programs.)

Visit our Virus Help page for information on how to prevent a virus, what to do if you have a virus, virus hoaxes, mal-ware and more.

Backup (an external drive that is separate from your computer)

  • All important files need to be backed up to a second location such as another computer, an external hard drive, Google Drive, or burned to an optical disk (CD or DVD).
You should be able to protect your important documents in the event something happens to your computer.
  • USB drives ("jump drives," etc.) are only for transporting documents; they are not a valid backup location.

Internet Connection

Speed (The speed at which data is transferred between the Internet and the local network/computer)

  • Recommended: Broadband (DSL, Cable, Ethernet)
  • Note: Broadband speeds of 786 Kbps and/or a 3G connection may be adequate for basic email correspondence and basic Internet usage, but you may not be able to participate in course activities involving media and/or web conferencing.

We highly recommend portable computers for classroom use.
