Study teaching at a top-ranked Christian university

Earn your Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree at a university with a solid reputation for preparing teachers for a career in education, providing public and private schools in Oregon with qualified early childhood, elementary, middle, and high school teachers. We offer PreK-12 preliminary teaching licensure with either a single-subject or multiple-subjects focus.

George Fox University is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) — one of only seven institutions in Oregon with national accreditation of its teaching programs — and our teaching programs are also approved by the Oregon Teacher Standards and Practices Commission (TSPC). George Fox is also consistently ranked among the top Christian colleges in the U.S. by Forbes.

Program Options

  • The MAT Full-Time format takes about 10.5 months (three semesters) to complete and starts in June of each year on the university's Newberg campus.
  • The MAT Virtual format is part-time and takes 16 months (four semesters); classes are held virtually two evenings per week and one Saturday per month, including one in-person session in Portland each semester.
  • The MAT in Your Community format is part-time and takes 16 months (four semesters); it starts in January each year in Portland, Salem and Redmond.
  • The MAT@Night format is part-time, takes 20 months (five semesters) and starts in late August each year at the Portland Center.

Faculty Expertise & Field Experience

All MAT faculty are experienced PreK-12 teachers who have gone on to become leaders in teacher education. In addition to excellent instruction, field experience will play a critical role in becoming a teacher. During each semester, candidates develop knowledge, skills, and dispositions in a variety of settings, including:

  • PreK-12 schools that partner with the program to provide quality student-teaching experiences
  • Community-based teaching and learning programs
  • Community-based service with local agencies providing services to children and adolescents
