Employment Interviewing At Its Best

By David Shaw
Parent Council Career Committee

Having been in the human resources profession for 20-plus years, I've had the opportunity to interview many applicants who were fresh out of school and new to the job interview process. I have also conducted numerous mock interviews of high school and college students. From these experiences, I have learned that many young applicants fail to understand that employers hire people not based solely on their technical skills.

From the Executive Director
The parent newsletter provides me an opportunity to share my heart with George Fox parents each month. This is both a privilege and a responsibility that prompts a lot of consideration on my part. Through the years of writing to parents, I've attempted to be open about where God is specifically working in my life. This month, I'm prompted to speak about God's faithfulness.

From the Director of Alumni Relations
The second principle in author Stephen Covey's The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People is to "Begin with the End in Mind." This simple encouragement to set goals is intended to help us achieve our desired outcomes in life. In many cases, merely visualizing the completion of an undertaking is enough to propel a person to succeed. More...

How can we use experiences - both good and bad - to mentor young people and show them how to bring Christ into their struggles? Don talks about the mentors he had as a child and as a young adult. Each of us will be encouraged and challenged to both be and seek mentors, regardless of our age.

Kaleo is for people who engage with youth - pastors, parents, teachers, and friends. We invite you to explore how mentoring works.
Registration includes lunch. $25 until February 23, and $30 at the door. To register and pay online go to kaleo.georgefox.edu.

Homecoming Highlights
Relationships matter at George Fox University! Alumni come back every year to connect with classmates, faculty, and friends. It's an opportunity for them to look back over the years at God's faithfulness in the lives of others with whom they shared a significant bond during college years. They get a chance to see current students, and see how the campus has grown and changed over the years. Homecoming 2007 will host reunions for the classes of 1997, 1987, 1982, 1977, 1967, and 1947. In addition, an affinity reunion and concert will be hosted for the New Vision Singers. For schedule and registration information go to homecoming.georgefox.edu.

Equality Ride to visit George Fox

Recently, Equality Ride, a group of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) students and allies has announced its intention to visit George Fox University on April 5. This is the second year Equality Ride has sponsored bus rides throughout the United States to visit the campuses of high-profile religious colleges and universities, who, like George Fox, affirm the traditional, orthodox Christian view of homosexuality and adhere to policies and practices consistent with Biblical teaching on that issue.

George Fox University clearly affirms the historic, orthodox Christian position that homosexual practice is incompatible with the teaching of Scripture, however the university intends to provide a gracious welcome to Equality Ride. We affirm the worth and dignity of all persons and intend to extend the love of Christ by engaging in a civil dialogue with our guests.

In anticipation of the group's visit, President Brandt has appointed a group, chaired by Brad Lau, vice president for student life, to work with representatives from Equality Ride to determine appropriate boundaries for their visit. While we plan to welcome and engage these visitors, we do not plan to allow them free access to the campus or students. In the next few weeks the university will finalize plans for our visitors to dialogue with faculty, students, and administrators in select settings and at predetermined times. We see this as an opportunity to model to students and our community how to be Christ in the world, including civil discourse with people with whom we disagree.

To find more information about the visit, a dedicated website has been created online at equalityride.georgefox.edu for students, parents, alumni, churches and friends. This site will be updated as new details are determined. If you have questions, please don't hesitate to contact either Brad Lau or Dana Miller, vice president for advancement and marketing, by e-mail at blau@georgefox.edu or dmiller@georgefox.edu.
