How to Help Your Student Get Into Graduate School

Susan Dutcher
Graduate Student, Doctor of Psychology Program

To apply or not to apply? This question weighs on the minds of many undergraduate students and their parents. Other questions students and families ask include: How do I apply? When should I apply? What are my chances of being accepted? Will it be worth it in the end?

By the time your student is a junior in college, they will most likely have some idea of where their academic and career interests lie. Ideally, during junior year, students will begin making decisions about whether to enter the workforce or attend graduate school. At this point, it is important to encourage them to pursue a career path that will combine their spiritual gifts, interests, and skills. Assessment of professional goals, research of the field of interest, and organized planning are all valuable in the decision-making process. In some cases, if your student is unclear about the decision to pursue graduate education, encouraging practical work experience in their chosen field may be a good recommendation.

November 2006

From the Executive Director
Disappointments are part of our everyday lives. They come in different intensities - from small irritations to shattering blows. They are unpredictable and inconvenient, causing us to wonder "wouldn't it be nice if our lives were in our control - if we weren't at the mercy of the unexpected situations that come our way?" More...

From the Parent Council
Imagine you're on a team of people trying to learn ways to evangelize others for Christ. How would you communicate what you know about the Savior to people who don't know him? What if they don't even know they need him or even care? What would you do then? What has been done in the past? What worked and what didn't? How could you avoid the clichés of the past? More...

From the Dean of Students
Many researchers have defined the decade of life from 18 to 28 years of age as one of the most formative periods in a person's life. It is often from the decisions made during these years that the rest of our life is shaped and impacted. I know this has been true in my life. How I came to live in Newberg, who I married, what I do for fun on Friday nights, my convictions, my passions, my worldview, what I'm investing my time in - all these things are directly related to the choices I made during that decade of my life. This is why I love ministering to college students, and why I feel privileged to be walking alongside them at this stage of their journey. More...

Parent Calls from the Student Phonathon Team
We are proud of our Phonathon team consisting of four student team members and one student supervisor. Each year the Phonathon team calls the George Fox University community to present the opportunity to give to the Annual Fund and other special projects. One of the groups called is parents of current students.

This year the Parents Council has chosen two specific projects for the team to focus on when they call you and other parents during November. The first is to help fund Serve Day - a day in September when campus closes for all students and employees to take the day off to participate in service projects around the community. The second funding project is for outdoor furniture for a new campus gathering spot - the patio of the newly completed Le Shana Residence Hall.

When you get a call from one of our wonderful Phonathon students asking you to participate in these projects, you will now be in-the-know! And we hope you will have the opportunity to stop by the Le Shana Hall patio to sit back, relax and enjoy.

Kaleo is for people who engage with youth - pastors, parents, teachers, and friends. We invite you to explore how mentoring works.
Registration includes lunch. $20 before January 18, $25 from January 18 - February 23, and $30 at the door.

Life@Fox
The LIFE@Fox programming series continues in November as we tackle "tough issues" as a campus community. The intention of this month is to create a campus conversation around several topics that are significant issues of our day. As a Christian community, our hope is that students and employees will seek ways to participate responsibility in our world as the hands and feet of Jesus. The first "tough issue" addressed was actually the week of October 30 with Cultural Celebration Week as we seek to be the people of God who operate as agents of reconciliation. Other issues addressed in chapels and evening sessions throughout the month include genocide, the persecuted church, peacemaking, AIDS, and other issues of social justice. In addition to these focused programs, every Monday night a group of 15-40 students meet as part of Quaere Verum to discuss global and local issues of concern. We look forward to a month of significant conversations on the campus of George Fox University!
