Upcoming Cohorts
In 2008 the EdD program will be admitting students into one of two cohorts.
K-12 Leadership - January 2008 Higher Education- July 2008
Each of the graduate programs offered at George Fox University are an extension of the university’s mission to provide high quality, Christ-centered education. This is accomplished through a variety of programs designed to prepare students to enter professions, advance within their profession, or enhance their knowledge or skills.
Professors teach all truth as God's truth, integrating all fields of learning around the person and work of Jesus Christ.
Program Information
The Doctor of Education program prepares educators to be leaders in either the K-12 system or higher education. The EdD curriculum includes a 36-semester-hour core that emphasizes leadership that is just, effective, and provides reasoned solutions to problems encountered in the process of meeting valued institutional and community goals. This currriculum provides a comprehensive framework from ethical, legal, social, political and historical perspectives within a Christian worldview. Students will be well-prepared in using qualitative and quantitative research tools to solve organizational problems. The program focuses on qualities of cultural, moral and organizational leadership as the basis for leading complex educational organizations. This professionally oriented program is designed to maximize accessibility for full-time educators.
New students are admitted into the EdD program cohorts twice each year in either a weekend format or an online format. Both cohort formats are designed for working professionals to continue full-time employment and enroll in no more than 4-5 hours each semester, and about 8 hours in the summer. The cohort format includes all required courses and totals about 40 semester hours. The final 15 semester hours of required course work can be completed by meeting requirements for additional endorsements in reading, school library media specialists, or one of the Oregon administrative license programs. Students can also transfer regionally accredited graduate course work as electives.
Weekend Cohort Model
The weekend cohort is geared toward individuals who live within commuting distance of the Newberg campus and/or prefer face-to-face classes. The weekend cohort meets one weekend each month beginning in January with face-to-face courses for the spring semester (January-July) and fall semester (September-December).
In the summer, there is a three-week intensive session in Newberg that meets daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Online Cohort Model
The summer start cohort is designed for individuals who either live beyond commuting distance to the Newberg campus and/or prefer online classes. The online cohort begins in July with a three week intensive session that meets Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The online cohort model then takes their fall and spring semester courses online.
Students can complete the 63-hour program in four years by taking 18 semester credits in year one and 15 semester credits in years two through four. Those students who have successfully completed appropriate course work past the master's degree may be able to finish the program at a faster pace.
Oregon Administrative Licenses
Students may also earn any of the two K-12 Oregon administrative licenses while completing the doctorate of education. A separate admission application is required for either the initial or continuing administrator license. Follow this link to specific course requirements for either of these licenses.
