Assistant Professor of Cinematic Arts

Matthew Hodges

The School of Cinema, Art and Design welcomed Matthew Hodges as an assistant professor of cinematic arts in 2025. He arrived as a familiar face on campus, having worked as an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Communication Studies the previous academic year. Before then, he served in the same capacity at Biola University, teaching faith and film, in 2024.

His professional experience also includes work as an Unreal Engine virtual reality developer and designer with the Biola University Public Health Department in 2024-25, and as a studio production coordinator (2018-24) and assistant producer (2017-18) with Biola’s Digital Learning Department.

Matthew’s area of expertise focuses on the integration of spiritual formation and film pedagogy. He earned a master’s of divinity degree from Biola University’s Talbot School of Theology in 2022 and bachelor’s degrees in both film and electronic arts and Chinese studies from California State University, Long Beach (2013).

He lives in Yamhill County with his wife Arielle, who also teaches at George Fox. Matthew enjoys playing disc golf in the beautiful outdoors of the PNW.
